[Mk2] [Turbo] Windscreen nightmare

Post by Tiny »

well driving home last night and a huge clod of earth shed itself from an oncoming lorry and smacked my windscreen. It sounded like a gunshot i honestly thought it was gonna come through proper brown trousers moment.

Anyway nice big crack on the screen #-o

now i have phoned up the windscreen people provided by my insurance direct line who happen to be autoglass and they are coming to fit a new one Ive got the right screen coming brown no sunstrip and the AM aerial coming but i thought i would read up after hearing a few other people having problems and its a huge job.........

factory repair manual page BO-35 for those with the manual

its 6 pages long and you have to remove

outside :
Bonnet
louvre
wipers

inside :
scuff plates
front pillar trim
map light
rear view mirror
sun visors
remove the front of the roof lining

now there is 2 seperate seals that have to be replaced according to te book of words too.

the outer moulding as it has to be cut off to get the screen out
and something called the Dam which is glued to the new screen seven mm in around the ides and top and 13mm around the bottom. both single use units and both have to be replaced if the screen is replaced.

I phoned up to check that they had the new moulding and that it was the proper toyota moulding with the rain channel as well. they couldnt confirm and he didnt know anything about the dam nor would he order it. he also said he definetly would not be needing to take off the bonnet nor disassemble half the trim to get the screen out as that in his own words ''Sounded way to much work and not the usual way to do it'' but surely its going to vary between manufacturer. also when the book says must be put in evenly with 2 people otherwise it will crack. he said no we can put them in a corner at a time hes not filling me with confidance :pale:

Now this is auto glass so you would expect them to know what they were doing but after the fiasco i had with my smart car and them i am worried. basically they didnt seal that properly and it started to lift on the motorway. Proper brown trousers that.

do i insist that its done properly to the toyota factory repair manual with the proper parts or should i just trust that they know what they are doing.

any advice or help appreciated.

Print off the Mr T guide and give a copy to them before they do anything... (ask them to sign a copy?) Then allow them to do it however they usually do with the proviso that if it doesn't work they put it right. I take it it's an insurance job so once you've paid the excess it doesn't matter to you if they have to do it again, other than inconvenience.

Hey dude

I got mine replaced in may/ June, through Direct Line/ Autoglass, got to say I did not read the Mr T fitting instructions :(
Only 1 guy came out to do the fitting and they did not remove any of the bits and the screen fits and it dont let water in!

I am now quite concerned that it has not been fitted correctly, will it rust to xxxx like on a Mk1?

The glass is not a 100% match to the original, but with dark tint sides I let it go! Other thing is there is some film crap all over mine that wont come off- it just smears, even with your supa doopa glass cleaner

Mine was replaced by R.A.C. in March. I didn't know about this "Fitting Procedure". One guy did it in half an hour :) , didn't realise about the rain channel until a lot later, months, until water pi$$ed in on the door switches  one day as the window was slightly open, so insist on that #-o . Otherwise it seems perfect, no leaks. :thumleft:

Hope this helps

FWIW I probably had 3 or 4 replacement screens on my old Turbo, plus one on the Roadster.

For the turbo - make sure first it is Jap import screen with bronze tint, rather than the UK green or blue glass. It will need to be a special order from Toyota potentially, especially if you've got a GT with the aerial in the windscreen glass ( .. which ISTR was £500 !)

Never had any problems with the fit / waterproofing of the glass - they replaced the standard seal (with a small gutter 'inner') with a 'T' shaped rubber that bridged between the glass and the paintwork.

:+: BTW, with the clingfilm mod - if you're building up the seals, it takes much longer for the sealant to dry under the clingfilm than when it is exposed to air - make sure you factor that in when you're doing any work.

well the twit came today took one look at the toyota factory repair manual only to say i know what im doing ive done loads of MR'2.

1st alarm bell gutter tray didnt know there was 11 bolts.
2nd alarm bell no Dam
3rd alarm bell its not MR'2s its MX'5s hes done loads of
4th alarm bell the twit looks at the printed off manual and looks and says oh thats a push fit.......its not at all its a lay gently against the stops and the new dam holds it at the correct height.

then he cracks it putting it in  Im not happy ive now got to take it down to Chichester to the nearest workshop on Saturday morning and have it done down there.

 atleast they are waiving the £60 excess but still what a fecking joke Autoglass are!

There should be no problems at all. I had my screen replaced by a local windscreen company and two guys came out and did it in one hour including hoovering up etc.

The only things that need removing are the scuttle panel and wipers. The old screen is cut out and all surfaces cleaned up. A special primer is painted around the bodywork to help the sealant bond properly and protect against corrosion. Next a thick layer of Windscreen sealant is applyed around the body. The chances are they will replace the rubber trim with a universal one called 'soft roll' This should be installed to the glass before its mated to the vehicle. The screen also sits on two plastic chocks at the bottom to ensure its positioned correctly and takes some of the weight of the screen. The screen is then mated to the car and may need gentle tapping with the palms of there hands to get it in at the corners. Job done.
