[All] [Generic] A Policeman Is Your Friend - NOT!!!

Post by JeffD »

Pulled up and fined £30 by a copper for my number plate being "totally illegal" ie. the "D" is too far away from teh "F" and I havent got the postcode and plate making compnay on my plate?! Complete jobsworth :-(

Image

Ive put another set on I had in the garage with the "D" next to the "F" but they dont have the postcode/maker on either - will I get nicked again or are they ok? Dont know whether I have to spend another £30 on another set of plates.

BTW Whilst this was happening a bunch of underage, non helmet wearing chavs on scrambler bikes with no plates and extremely loud exhausts were tearing round the neighbourhood - I just dont get it.

Nofear - you can be nicked for yours because its in italic - a new law comes into effect 1st november banning the sale and making of "illlegal" plates so all these ebay platemakers are for it.

Theyre also about to double the fine from £30 to £60. Cosmic! :-(

It does sound a bit harsh to give you a fine, he could have used his discretion i guess. BUT surely you knew it was illegal anyway?

In no way am i having a go, but i dont see the need in having anything other that standard font (ANY other font looks tacky!) and legally spaced plates

looking at changing front plate i want to put an import size one on the front as said on an earlier post, so maybe time to just order a standard set of plates then and be done with it :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

I didnt think they would be bothered - its been on the car about 3 yeras and sailed through MOTs' etc. I thought they were only interested in the likes of people whoc really distort the letters or add black dots etc to change "1"s to "3"s etc

Saying they cant read it is a bit lame IMO

Sounds like he was doing his job, you have an illegal plate and he followed the law and brought this to your attention.

*shrug*

I guess he couldn't sort the people on the bikes out because he was dealing with you, once you have a legal plate he'll have more time to look at the important issues.

I also have an illegal plate, I have no gap in the middle, I'm using the right fonts and things but have to swap it for one with a space for the MOT. If the police bring this to my attention then I'll accept it, it's the risk you take when you break the law.

Similar situation to having tinted windows, i got stopped last year and fined £30 and told i should get the tints removed (they're not *really* dark!!!). I left them though, if you like you can see the £30 as a charge for having tinted windows, or an altered num plate!

I actually replaced the plates about 30 mins later with some old ones I had - just thought the fine was a bit harsh - I thought he would of been able to issue a rectification notice or something but it seems to be all about raising extra tax now - chavs on bikes havent got any money so ignore them, working people have so find the smallest thing you can and fine them. Another police supporter bites the dust...

Mine hasn't got the plate makers name on it nor is it reflective. All these different laws are ridiculous, I would just pleed ignorance if I was pulled on it.

unless your car is an imported car, its illegal to have square plates to....

square plates are only legal on cars that came with a square holder...
uk cars didnt, so legal plate or not, having it sqaure will make it illegal....

ive just got my square plate to go on my rev5 (came with a uk plate)...

Sir Jim speaketh the truth :-(

BTW I dont think pleading ignorance gets you far - was given 3 options....1) Confiscation of car, 2) court appearance or 3) sign there and then for a £30 fine

Happy campers! ;-')

I always thought it was to catch the likes of people putting "1"s and "3"s too close together to make a "B" etc.

If anything, what Ive done makes it easier to read...was only trying to be helpful officler :-(

the mot station next to where i work fails so many cars on illegal number plates !! i recently put a post up asking where i could get a plate made up and was shocked at how many replies i got and how many different plate makers there are ! being in the car trade i can get plates made up no bother but law states you must give your name and address and the plate maker must have their name/post code on as well . the number plate i had made has the legal size lettering , the plate is the legal size but its illegal because it has a border round it and a gb sign . to look at it looks ok but just how many number plates do you see these days with playboy signs on them or itallic letters etc

this is legal

The police do this sort of thing because.......A...drivers are easy targets, B.... Statistically it looks like a solved crime......C... It's easy... D... The police couldn't catch a cold in a doctor's waiting room.

True Story........Whilst out walking with my dog I saw a burglar leaving a property with a sheet containg his swag over his shoulder. I followed him back to his hovel on the local dump estate and promptly phoned the police who arrived the next day to take a statement and have me show them where I followed him to. I still haven't heard anything 3 weeks later. I'm afraid that unfortunately the police have turned into a joke, too many chavs, drunks, paperwork, hoops, red tape, rotten apples, blah blah :thumleft:

On the fixed penalty notice under make of vehilce it just says "Toy" instead of "Toyota".

Considering opting to go to court then turn up with a matchbox model with the number painted on the front (mis-spaced of course) and plead not guilty to driving a toy MR2 ! LOL ;-')
