Tour of Wales in the MK1 *** Now With Pictures ***

Post by AW11 Forever..! »

Myself and Joanne have decided to squeeze a 2 day tour of Wales in next week. Driving down to the West Midlands on Monday night we will tour Tuesday and Wednesday, coming back on Thursday morning.

Does anyone have any useful information on which are the best roads to drive, best places to view Wales and things to go see and do, or and places to stay.

Any advice and information would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Michael

Not sure on where to go but we're of to wales tomorrow for a week. Not taking the Mk1 though :( thats in the body shop getting repairs to the rear arches then a full respray.

Will be driving the C2 VTS instead. We've hired a cottage just outside Cardigan Bay for the week and plan to do abit of sight seeing during the week.

black mountains is great area & if your up for some spooky stuff the Skirrid Inn is a very interesting place to stay (had a genuine scarry moment there some years ago)
http://www.skirridmountaininn.co.uk/

also a couple oy years ago did the Mid wales run with MK1 club Lake Vyrnwy (sp?) exellent roads
http://www.mr2mk1club.com/pastevs122.html
maybe Fred and Doris still have the route we did

I regularly get to Llangollen and do the Horse Shoe pass, bit of Snowdonia the out to the coast at Ross, get food at Britania Inn just before you get onto the Horshoe Pass

I lived in Aberystwyth for 3 years while at uni. There are some great roads around there and mid wales. My best advice would be to get on some of the B roads as they are normally the most fun and quietest. If you do end up by Aberystwyth there are two great places for you to go. One is Borth, a small village on the coast just 5 miles from Aber. It has an amazing beach (about 3 miles i think) but you can take your car onto the estuary part. It's where i first had fun doing donuts and power sliding. The second place is Devils bridge. I'm not too sure what the B road is that gets you there but it is just out of Aberystwyth (and shown on the map). It's one of the best roads i've driven on and there is beautiful scenery too. :thumleft:

The A4086 is a great bit of road between Capel Curig and the junction with the A498 (the A4086 continues as Llanberis Pass). It allows some 'spirited' driving without a great deal of risk due to the sweeping views down the valley 8) Whenever I go to Snowden it's one of the highlights of the drive, although the A5 from Llangollen to Capel Curig is good too if the traffic's light.

Llanberis Pass itself is good but watch out for the walkers and sheep!

This is brilliant guys, just what I was after.

We are starting off @ Sanbach in Cheshire on Monday night, staying @ the Bears Head lodge, bearing in mind we are coming from Durham in the North East

Tuesday we are heaing for Colwyn Bay, then Conwy, Llanfairechan, Carneed Llewellyn, Capel Curig, Betws-y-Coed, Penmachno, Portmeirion, Ciltalgarth, Bala, Dolgellau, Machynlleth, Borth, Aberystwyth, Devils Bridge, Cardigan Bay staying @ the Webley Hotel.

Wednesday leaving Cardigan to Llandelio, through the Black Mountains, Twynllanan, Crai, Libanus, Llanfrynach, Crickhowell, Abergavenny is the last main place before heading to Coleshill for an overnight stay @ The Swan hotel.

Any more info and interesting stop off points whould be most welcomed.

Cheers
Michael

Thirded. This is most probably the road that got me hooked on driving on decent roads. And driving/camping trips... :)

Gotta do it again sometime but in the '2 this time.

I'd reccommend Portmerion if you can fit it in. That's one of the best places i've ever been to.
Betys coed is really nice, Bala's sh*t but a nice road round the lake and further (not the road on the far side - avoid that).
The Lanberis Pass is awsome the first time you drive down it - i've walked back up it from Lanberis after doing Snowden and, with chaffing, that aint so great! The A5 through the Ogwen valley has stunning scenery which includes Tryfan - one of the worlds great mountains!
I'd just make the point of keeping one eye on the road as the scenery is extremely distractng!
Enjoy!

Hi, I can't find Portmerion on the map and it's not in the list of places in the back, any ideas.

Cheers
