[Mk2] [Turbo] Helicoiling exhaust manifold stud

Post by markmr2turbogt »

Hi,
Has anyone here tried and succeeded in helicoiling an exhaust manifold stud with the head in situ ? With turbo and manifold removed it looks like there should be enough room - but will a drill plus stand/guide ( I wanna drill straight ;-) ) fit in there ?
Or....should I just bite the bullet and remove the head to do it ?

cheers

Mark

Be interested to how you solve this - have exactly the same problem with the stud nearest the drivers side :-(

Take the exhuast manifold/turbo off and have a look were its snapped off.

I had this with my car and it had snapped off leaving about 1/2" sticking out, if there is some sticking out use stud extractor to remove snapped stud.

If it has snapped off flush with head, personnaly I`d remove head to do it.

Hi,
Cheers for the replies.
Turbo and manifold are already off (have been for a while). It is not a case of a snapped stud stuck in the head, the thread in the head (stud closest to passenger side) is completely stripped - the stud slips out as soon as the nut is tightened to the correct torque.

I'm wondering whether its a case of giving it a go in place and if it goes wrong then remov the head and do it properly LOL

Yeah you can get in the ok. You might be better off fitting a timesert, they're solid sleaves instead of the helicoils.

I use them all the time over helicoiling.

I had a right pain with these, loads snapped off. I managed to get them out by filing the shaft down to a square taper and hammering a brake spanner on the end. I had to weld a nut on one of them.
