Alternator woes...

Post by GaryR »

Got the alternator out of the car and it's appears to be very much seized as I can't turn it by hand.

What's the best way to un-seize it and how long should the brushes be ? Haynes says to measure them and replace if they are below the minimum length, but helpfully, doesn't say how long that should be.

Thanks,
Gary.

yeah it does, the specs are on the first page of each section, in this case on page 123

its says min is 4.5mm and standard is 10.5mm
Unless I'm very much mistaken...

It will cost around £30 for a alternator refurb, they'll replace both bushes and the brushes if needed.

if its seized because its been sitting for a while undo the belt and get a socket/spanner on the centre bolt. you should be able to free it off. after a few turns it will loosen off. worth a try before you spend out the money.

How did I miss that...... :-k

May be I should leave my glasses on when I'm working on the car. :)

I'll see if I've got a socket big enough... looks to be bigger than 22mm.....
