[Mk2] [Turbo] RE: New turbo technologies. VNT/ VVT

Post by costelg »

Firstly is the ceramic CT20b stock rev 3 turbo, a Twin Scroll Turbo???

Second is the steel GT4 a Twin Scroll Turbo???

Third I have heard a lot about variable vane turbos lately, especially for diesels. Have driven a few 105/115 brake 2L diesel VW's with this technology the lag is non existent, alright at the top end boost drops off a bit (possible undersized turbo).
The engine is 2L turbo, full boost at 1500rpm!!.. full boost is i some 25psi 1.75 bar approx (or more in some cases).
This technology if applied to petrol cars would be just a massive jump in performance. I understand the the high pressures would be an issue in petrol cars but the lag 1500rpm full boost. Imagine getting full stock boost in the 2 at 2000rpm!!!

Is there a (VNT Garrett) (or other) turbo available for petrol engines??
Anyone here, agents, dealers, distributers, working with turbos, hear of this technology being applied to petrol turbos?
Maybe this technology being applied to new products in a few years??
I presonally would wait a few years and pay twice the price of current new turbos to get a turbo woth this technology.

Well VNT is not new... Search through the histories of MR2 Turbo Upgrades and you will likely come across a ~15 year old article from the USA using VNT.

Something to remember about Diesel Turbos.
Full Boost at 1500RPM Fine.... But the Diesel Engine does not rev much past 4000.
Consider how much more exhaust gas your 3sGTE is trying to fit through the turbo and wastegate at 7250?!

Paul.

PS, Both CT20b's are 'Twin Entry' - The Japanese MR2's got a Ceramic exhaust wheel (Lighter, Presumably faster to spool, but more prone to failure?) - The Celica was Steel, as I suspect any UK-rebuilt turbo will be.

The newest 911 turbo (997) uses twin vnt turbos to great effect. Expensive though.

In regards to the 911 turbo, i would love to see a plot of boost pressure vs RPM for that..

I am not sure how to control the VNT turbo actuator from what I know some of the old diesel ones were electrical (solenoid i think).

Surely this must be possible in a 2..
