[Mk2] [NA] Clutch master cylinder (rear) how to fix? + how to bleed clutch?

Post by **toyota-mr2** »

Hi all.

I need some help and quickly.

I noticed the other day I lost all gears and the guy downstairs told me I had air in the clutch system, sure enough I did and he helped me bleed it from the front part of the car, a day later the same thing happened again but bleeding the front didnt work, I noticed the rear (engine) has clutch fluid dripping from the master cylinder so the problem lies there.

I have ordered a clutch master cylinder and I am going to fit it tomorrow.

How the heck do I do it . . . . . . is it hard to do?

A guide to how to do it the easiest and what tools I need would be great.

I also need to know how to exactly bleed the clutch after I fit it.

Thanks alot.

dont want to pish you off but the Master Cylinder is the one in the front of the car, the Slave cylinder is the one in the back of the car on the gearbox :thumleft:

Skywalkers Slave cylinder removal mini guide -

First remove 17mm nut and bolt through engine mount

Then the 4 14mm's on the firewall. Then 2 on the box for the other half of the engine mount, then the 2 12mm holding the cylinder on. There are 3 bolts on top. When doing it from underneath the car, you only need to remove the 2 left most bolts. The other one just holds a bracket to keep the metal lines in check

I did the clutch bleeding like this -

- Get someone under the car with a ring spanner on the bleed nipple and with a pipe into a glass
- Top the Master cylinder up to the top
- Tell Person under car to open the Nipple up
- You press the clutch and hold it on the floor
- Tell Person under the car to Fully close the nipple
- You then let go of the clutch pedal
- Tell person under the car to open the nipple up again
- You press the clutch and hold it down again
- Tell person under the car to fully close the nipple again
- You let go of the clutch pedal
- You Check the Master cylinder and top it up (unless your lucky to have 3 friends and someone can watch the master cylinder lol )
- Repeat untill the fluid is comming out the bleed nipple and no air bubbles. Just make sure the nipple is fully closed before you let go of the peddal Wink
- Once done tighten the nipple, give it a few pumps with your foot and it should be nice and stiff

Theres other methods eg sucking it through with a long pipe with a 1 way valve on the bleed nipple and sucking it with your mouth (But stop before it gets close to you)

Also another method that I thought was quite good if your still stuck, connect a tube from you brake bleed nipple to your clutch bleed nipple and pump the brake pedal, keep checking your brake fluid and topping it up utill your clutch cylinder is full

have fun
