(for the first time) and found that there is a cut wire with two bare ends.http://www.wiztronic.com/pics/IMG_4816.jpg- i take it that it's probably a good idea to connect it back up again as its all standard wiring?
- although it'd be a lot easier for them to remove the bulb.
Does anything not work on your dash?
Have had the car 4 years but everything seems to work... I shall connect it back up and see what happens... I did note that the broken wire was shorter than the other wires (i.e there was a bit missing from the middle assuming they were all the same length to start with).... Does the speedo and power steering work?. did you car have factory fit alarm?? 
. it might go to a bulb that someone didn't want lighting, ie. an Alarm Warning or Security light.. 
If an aftermarket is fitted and the factory one is bypassed the lamp may have been constantly on..
(which seems to be working!) no new lights have appeared right away everything seems to be same as normal. There are 3-wire chips that are wired in... I've got one in the garage that I took off before getting one of Stef D's amazing clamping delimiters.(I think!).- but if it was something done deliberately you would think that there would be tape round the ends of the wires or something to stop any shorting... and i like a good mystery... i'll update with my findings tomorrow!- the wire does seem to go to the speedo, having connected it back up i've noticed no difference whatsoever! 
/ converters (You snip it and join it to the chips wires). When I installed the clamping one I just re connected it back up... I've one of those conversion chips that wire in there in the garage. I'll see if I can dig it out and take a pic for you.
- in my car the purple wire has been cut and run to the input on the delimiter - that then has a +ve and -ve wire, and a third wire which runs into the back of the instrument cluster.
