Hi chaps..
Here's the problem.. i have thai boxers old MR2. The speedo is not working. Its a 1993 rev 2 so i think its digital rather than mechanical..
it is delimited and converted to MPH
so presuming its the convertor chip thingy....where the heck should i be looking to find it to fix it

Start with the speedo drive on the gearbox. Do you get the check engine light if you drive for more than 8 secs with RPM between 2.5-5k? If not then your speedo is prob partially working coz the ecu is still getting a signal but no display.(its error code 42 btw if you dont have a speed signal). So its either gauge, cable or drive unit in gearbox.
ok So here is how I would trouble shoot:
1) check speedo drive to see if it is producing a suitable output.
2) Check or renew the cable.
3) Lastly, new speedo unit in the dash.
I doubt the speedometer would fail, I have seen ones sill working after 200,000km!
thats great mate...
Have you got any pointers as to how i go about checking these things...
I.E top of the gear box or car on ramps..
Im pretty useless
Stick '1991 mr2 bgb' into google and hit 'Im feeling lucky' Then choose Body Electrical System. I know your car's a 1993 but it won't be any different.
Right ... That thing on top of the gearbox...its a circle looking thing with 3 wires coming out of it...
Well one of the pins is bent and it looks like someone has attempted to fix it before as it was connected with spade connectors..
does anyone know what this circle looking thing is called and i also think i will need the clippy bit that attaches to it..

That thing? Toyota refer to it as a speedo sensor, part number 83181-12050. As for the wiring that connects to it, you'll probably need to nick that off a crashed one as Toyota don't supply bits of loom.
That's gonna be different to yours because that's a Rev1 so it has a cable driven speedo. I would have assumed that we're talking about the same thing though, cause it's the speedo sensor, which is round and has 3 pins on the top of it, and goes into the gearbox.
Probably not from Toyota I would see if you can find someone breaking a car - you could try MR2 Ben or GTS-Chris, they break cars quite frequently. Both their details are in the shiny new Affiliate directory! http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic. ... 099#897099
Grrrrrrrrrr
well i have swapped the speedo thingy over and it still does not work...
the one that was on was in good condition anyway...
So thats £50 quid down the drain
I have a Rev3 speedometer sensor in my garage(Electric NOT cable driven). Let me know if you are interested. It is second hand but i bought it from 3S and realised it is the wrong one.
It's fixed
It was the convertor chip thingy...
Once i found it we cut it out the wires and re-connected without it and she started working straight away..
Took the wrap off the chip and she was quite corroded..
Thanks for the offer of the speedo matey...i
