[Mk2] [Turbo] Reconditioned turbo fitted, running problems

It all started a couple of years ago with smoke coming from the exhaust of my 1992 T bar Turbo. I took it to my mates dads garage to have this rectified. He diagnosed it as a fault in the engine so off he went sorting this out. Anyway to cut a long story short about £700 later he found out it was the turbo to blame & not what he first thought.
I bought a reconditioned one & this was fitted. I took the car out and it drove ok around town, that was until I put my foot down. The car that once was a rocket was now like a metro. It sounded as though you could hear air being drawn through the system as it accelerated. I took it back to him and he tried various things, but to no avail. In the end I just took it & ran it as it was. I couldn't justify spending anymore money as it had gone well over the £1000 mark by now. I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on the problem as the car has been sat for a year now after I caved in and bought another car. Or is it just destined to be another spares & repairs sale on Ebay.

When you put your foot down does the Turbo spool up but you don't get the increase in power?

If this is the case as was with mine then the Cam timing is out.


I changed the Cam belt on my Tubby and afterwards when putting foot down I could hear the turbo spooling as per normal but the extra power was tiny. Turned out the cam timing was a tooth out.


I'd check your cam timing.

could be many things, check error codes first just in case

tbh you should maybe consider breaking the car for spares, could get a fair whack off money back that way

Thanks to all that replied. I'll just put it on ebay this week. The sad thing is that its in pretty good nick (apart from the engine problem that is)I only put a new stainless mongoose exhaust on a week before the turbo packed in. What can you do.

Its just a money thing... It just keeps going up & up & dont know when it will stop.
I'm in cumbria so not that many sports car specialists around here, unless it goes to the toyota dealership (even more ££££££'s)

I have to say it sounds like a boost leak to me as well. If the turbo's doing it's job but then leaking half it's high pressure air to atmoshpere then you'll be running like an N/A.
Alternatively, it could also be a cracked exhaust manifold. You'd still hear the air escaping but the turbo would be lacking the required gas flow to spin it up to start with.
