[Mk2] [Turbo] Wharped my discs i think how can i stop it from happening again.

Post by 2barGee »

I have got rev3 standard discs and brembo pads at the front. I did a track day about a month ago and now when i brake at hight speed i get some vibrations through. Soi am guessing i have wharped my front discs!!!

Now i was going to fit some carbotecs with some new rev3 discs but will the same thing happen again???

Or is its something else??

Thanks

Hi

What make std discs are they. Could be that they are of bad quality metal.
I have Carbotechs on mine and am running std discs. I am very hard on brakes and have not had any problems even from high speed braking.

No the car had standard disks with brembo pads when i bought it. Since then i have done one track i bought some carbotecs but did not fit them as the brembo pads had loads left on them so i thought i would just kill them and fit new disks and pads.

The pads have still got enough on them for another track day but i am getting the vibrations at high speed when brakeing???

OK...

If the discs were warped, you would also feel a pulsating under gentle or prolonged braking too.

If you're only getting juddering under hard braking, it would sugest ball joints, bushings, droplinks etc...

Is the juddering felt through the pedal only or the pedal and steering?

er..... the juddering is just through the pedal mate, its only under hard or long breaking i feel it. :-k

Hard to say for sure, but I guess the discs could be warped, the pads wearing unevenly or possible have a calliper sticking slightly:-k

Put your new pads and discs on. Follow the Carbotech bedding in proceedures and you should be fine. If the symptoms are imediately apparent, then look at the suspension components.

Whilst doing the disc/pad swap over, remove the rubbers & slides and give them a good clean out . Lube up and refit using something like Budweg Calliper Lubricant or the Mintex CeraTec stuff (avoid copper grease at all costs). Check the pistons are free moving too.

drive around a bit and then get out see if discs are very hot this would tell you if caliper is lazy and sticking

I have always found Brakes International very good for OEM equivalent parts. They also supply the Budweg Brake Lubricant. Phone them get pricing and then ask for MR2 club discount

I bought my car and the discs/pads were quite new. they warped, so I put a new set on from Brakes International. They eventually warped again after several thousand miles. After some searching about I discovered th hubs may have been warped and in need of a re-skim. So, I bought some EBC grooved/drilld discs and Greenstuff pads. I also asked the fitter to check the hubs before fitting. He forgot, and since then my discs have warped again. Bloody brakes!!!

possible have a calliper sticking slightly

Touch the top of each 'caliper' the really hot one Is sticking. If sticking that wheel will have heaps of brake dust on the rim.Eliminate this one.

You may not want to touch calllipers (sticking or not) after a run - you could land up with serious burns

You can feel any heat differences through the alloy wheels.

Whats the worry, just sounds like the discs are slightly out of true. Just keep using them until the pads are dead and replace with new pads / discs.

Uneven hub faces and incorectly torqued wheels can also cause disc warping from what I have heard.

That's Interesting...I am fussy on my wheel nuts being torqued to 120 nm.
