[Mk2] [NA] i'm now an owner :D

Post by john_p_b »

bit the bullet and bought my project mr2 g-limited.

1st thing to do is rip the engine out as it's knocking so loud i can't believe it still actually drives!

there's a bit of paint needed but i'm trying to decide if i should just get it blown in or go the whole hog and get a full respray to make it mint.

it's already got 16" alloys, big noisy exhaust (not too noisy though), induction kit and front strut brace so not really too many more bits i'd want to bolt on. unless of course you folk on here can recomend so must have add ons?

i'm sure i'll soon be back on many times asking how do i do this that or t'other as i'm not that familiar with the mr2 but i always liked the look of them so when this one came up i couldn't resist at the price.

cheers

Bit further South than you in Lutterworth. In answer to your post regarding recommendations, some decent rubber and a brake pad upgrade certainly improves the MR2 instantly!

Hiya John and welcome.
What did you buy then? Rev 1,2,3,4,5? T-bar?
If its a rev1 change all the brakes to the later cars specs....braided lines also if you can.
Get some piccies posted so we can oooh & aahh!

Hey dude welcmoe to IMOC

Got to agree with Rowland- TYRES are soooo important on an MR2, I would be really weary of any "budget" type tyres.

Enjoy you '2

it's a 1991 T-bar.

new brake pads were fitted all round before the engine became anti social and the bloke parked it up.

definately need tyres as it's not got a matching pair at either end! not too much of a issue though as i get nice discounts through work 8)

Good man.. rev1s all the way. Save the money by going for the blow over then with the cash you've saved 1) New rubber £250
2) Geometry set up £100
3) Rev 2+ brakes £250 (2nd hand on here)
4) Quickshifter and gear oil change (if it's not had one) £50 + £50

Should save at least that £700 going for the blow over?.. and of course if you ever need to sell it's easier to recoup selling used but good aftermkt parts than it is a respray thats been done (in terms of car value).
If there is any change left over swap the standard wheel for something smaller & fatter. You've done realistically all you can do for a n/a engine so go for 'driving' mods. Handling and 'feel. After that I'd look to suspension upgrades if/when you want to go further.

thanks for the replies folks.

to be honest the respray is more a case of how much of a rush i'd be in to get the car back on the road than money as i have a relative works in a body shop  guess i'll get the mechanical side of things done with then see how it goes.

whats the difference in the brakes then? larger diameter discs or twin pots etc?

geometry - i'm sure i've read they have adjustable camber? again i can get the camber and tracking etc all sorted at the body shop as they have all the kit there to basically do everything apart from corner weighting.

quick shift is high up on the list as they are so cheap! couldn't believe when i saw them on ebay under £30! are they any good though? bear in mind i'm not going to be using it as a race car but just my day to day car with the possibility of a track day or 2 a year. gear oil will get changed when i drop the engine out anyway i guess so thats that taken care of.

what size wheels are best on these then? it's got 16's on at the moment with 205/45 rubber at the moment.

thanks for all the info so far. finding this bb very usefull.

I found my shifter a big improvement, though I did splash out and get the TRD. Most with e-bay types seem happy though.
Get wider rubber on the rear but stay with 16s. Those or 15s are best. Later rev brakes have bigger calipers and discs.
