[Mk2] [NA] Rear Strut... an MoT Failure?

Post by m4rcus »

Hi,

after posting about this before, I forgot about them and the car went through an MoT last year. This year, different garage they have picked up that they are rusty. Is it an MoT failure?

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w296 ... 3Large.jpg

[EDIT]
They are thinking of charging me £25 ea for the braces, and £45+vat for the fitting. The parts are not in until Tuesday, so they are letting me take my car away until then. Anyone know how much time I have to do the work myself before I have to pay for the retest?

Cheers,

Marc

yes it should be an mot faliure coz its classed as a chassis brace... i would get another from MR-T but dont get them to fit... do it yourself, its only 2 bolts for each 1

Hi, typical though that it wasn't picked up last year... Ah well.

The big question is 'can I drive it away?' I know that there are different bandings of failure and what you can and cannot do, but I cannot seem to find out the details on the internet. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Cheers,

M

hi, when I mean 'drive it away' is related to the need to pay for a full retest... eg, I think for some brake failures you cannot remove it unless you pay for a retest... where as some other minor faults you can have 7 days or so...

best off talking to yout mot centre... they should class it as a minor..

or ask them if you can remove them and do a re-test after you done it. there only like strut braces afterall

they should have just given you an advisory really. my car has passed loads of MOTs with them rusted through

I think it should have been an advisory too.. last year, the other garage didn't even mention it. I think they are after the work to be honest. But as someone that has changed the cam belt, I think the four bolts will be easy enough!

i payed £18 each for mine from toyota and like said fit yourself thay are ripping you off matey, had to undo the plastics to pull down to get to bolts as im a big oath with shovels as hands but very easy to do lots of wd40 and decent socket or spanners job done, and money in back pocket and as im a family man thay say every little helps :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

oh and yes thay are just braces i drove my car with one completely snapped i had a heart attack when i see it only had car 2 days and thought it was very serious, but very common fault on these i would like to be able to make solid ones of these to be honest maybe one day when i get a new welder and pillar drill :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

Hmmm, after speaking with the garage, they have said that I will get a £25 part retest fee if I carry out the work, but not if they do it, just the hours labour. 'kin cheeky gits!

If I take it to another garage, it's almost the same as letting them do the work. I just cannot work out why it was not failed last year on that. Ah well, only money.

go back and tell them there aftermarket chassis stiffeners and that the prev owner put them there!! tell them you want it re-mot'd for free or you will contact fair trading!

afaik only T-bars have them anyway?! there only held on by 2 bolts and weigh about 0.5kg so they cannot be that important!

I think that they know they are proper parts of the car, being they ordered the replacements... just going to ride with it now, last business that I put towards them, and also, working in a 200+ company just up the road, I'll recommend people take their car elsewhere. :)

Mine were rusted and the garage told me they need changing but don't class as a test item so couldn't fail, Strange how different garages have different rules to follow??

Normally its at the garages discretion regarding retest fees ,the one i use gives me two weeks to return the car before paying again, and if took back within that time only the failed items are tested ,After that time a full test is needed.
Have a read of this it may help ,but then again all garages seem to have their own rules so shop around if possible ,

Agreed, mine was rusted and went through on MOT in April, but was only mentioned as an advisory. Swapped mine for a new one yesterday, as said, its only £18 + vat from Mr T.

dont know about it being a fail or not etc....

but as for the removing car then paying for part re-test or free re-test if you get work carried out there thats the new mot rules that came in not all too long ago :(
