[Mk2] [Generic] Rear Arch Rolling

Post by gtech »

Has anyone had their Rear Arch's rolled on the Mk2 ???? if so what equipment was used, who did it, and does anyone Know of any operator in North Yorkshire/Teesside Area.

Just spoke to one company who would do it but are not happy to as in their opinion the arch is more straight than round and there is a small risk of putting a kink in the wing ???

Any comments would be appreciated.

Hi Graeme, Jay had his arches rolled up at Revolution in Gateshead. Maybe drop him a line see what he says.

Might be in the market myself for getting the arches rolled.

Yep already spoke to them as has KrisB and they are reluctant to do MR2 arch rolling due to the shape of the arch.

So gone for the next best option "Archenemy" who are mobile, can get a small group of us together down my place and they might come out for the day and do the lot.

Good opportunity to fire up the BBQ or get Pizzas in and make a mini meet/MR2 Tech day ;-)

I rolled all my arches myself, don't kmow why its any harder on an MR2 than anything else, very few arches are truley round, if theres a group of you oop north your better off buying an arch roller between you, there only around 250 quid so would be cheaper over all.

Just soften the paint with a heat gun and roll away, its pretty esy tbh.

none of my wheels rub now and as you can see there reasonably close.

did yo pull/flare your arches at the rear or did you just roll the lip.

I did look at buying one of the machines, but its the hassle, and I would'nt trust myself on anyone's car. Having said that I have read enough info on Arch rolling and have a few good demo films.

I think the secret is patience and getting the heat right, oh and only doing a little at a time.

I've also got the plans to convert a car jack to one of those machines, and was tempted to get our engineering boys at work to knock one up.....but again, do I want the hassle.

If I can get Archenemy up for a group of us, the cost wont be too bad, and they are reputed to be the best in the game.

Thanks for the information guys, very much appreciated......given me food for thought.

Just rolled the lip mate, you dont really flare them, if you want to flare them properly they need cutting and a section welding in.

It really is very easy to do but I know what you mean about other peoples cars, i did Andy Runners immaculate car for him and it was a bit nerve wracking (dont tell him though - lol), getting the heat right is easy, just warm rather than hot, dont want to bubble the paint, just so it starts to get a bit uncomfortable to touch with your hand, thats enough to soften the paint and stop it cracking.

Also make sure theres no road crud around the lip or it wont fold up IYSWIM.

I think it would be easier just to buy a machine, it would pay for itself in no time.

Hmmmm seriously have me thinking now, I realise the thing could pay for itself in no time, as long as people were willing to sign a disclaimer against the paint cracking......would find a few wreckers to practice on.....sure there is a few BMW parked in our street :D

all arch rolling companies say this anyway - they'll try and not crack the paint but if it does it's your responsibility to get it fixed.

When I had it done by the archenemy it turned out I had a replacement rear skin on the passenger wing so couldn't get it rolled as much - still clears a 245x40x17 9inch on ET35 though

Handy knowing someone local now with a roller. The mk1.5 needs a little rolling on the rear arches so if you need any practice. :)

I havent got any secrets mate!!!

A few tips mind:

Take your time!

Do just a bit of the arch at a time

Warm that area with a heat gun - dont hold the gun too close (dont want to blister the paint) and warm it up gradually, remember all you want to do is soften the paint so just warm to the touch is enough

It takes quite a bit of force to roll it so dont be a fraid to give it some stick

Regularly warm the area with the heat gun

Remove all the screws from the plastic trim parts around the wheel arch, as if you dont you could force the self tapping screws into the body work and they poke out through the wing (I learnt this the hard way!!!)

90% of the time its just the top middle part of the arch that needs rolling anyway

Ensure the lip on the arch you are rolling is free from dirt, give it a quick clean out

The rear dampers may need unbolting at the top as the roller may be too long

You may need to take off the front calipers (no need to take them completely off - just unbolt them and get them out of the way) to get a full sweep of the arch - although I didnt need to do this for my 8.5 inch wide fronts - as like I say most of the time you only roll the top bit

To do an absolutely top job you remove the damper, remove the spring, pop the damper back on, roll the arch, pop the wheel on and compress the suspension with a jack to up to full bump to test if you wheel now goes past the arch without interference, this sounds long winded btu is often quicker in the long run rather than keep having to re-do it cos you havent rolled the arch enough.
