Hampshire Meon valley run

Post by Tiny »

Monday i tried a new route out down to the Inlaws and God its GOOD!

It takes in THE best roads in hampshire and can finish at a multitude of places and can be lengthened/shorten to suit.

about 38 miles at its fullest but Lots of long sweeping A roads and a few tight twisties thrown in for good measure perfect for the summer 8)

Starts at the Car park of the Holiday Inn next to Point A heads down to Alton then allong the A32 following the Meon valley.

Regroup at Point B the Bucks Head

Before heading down to Wickham then up to the top of portsdown hill for either a BBQ and relax taking in the view/kick about or thier is a pub 100 yards on the other side of the road at point C

heres a link Linky
let me know your thoughts and feelings please Alternatively would make a great midnight run especially as there is a 24 hour burger van ontop of the hill in the car park.

Late June/early July to garuntee best weather. please choose a date and a time.

That's one of my favourite drives :thumleft: I used to do the Alton - Basingstoke drive at least once a month and it's absolutely cracking if you get a clear run. Alton to Fareham's superb too.

Hi all,
I'm an ex Altonian, married into Bordon a few years ago but don't hold that against me.
Picked up my 2 a couple of weeks ago and well up for the run if on either of the July dates (providing 3S can sort my steering in time).

I think this one had the Advan 3 spokes. Will keep my eyes open though cos I'm round those parts quite frequently. :thumleft:

I'd be up for this - its a great run, I do the Alton-B'stoke run daily on my commute 8)

Don't assume doing it late at night will give you a clear road, I see a dead deer almost every morning so you need to be sensible as a crash with such an animal at speed will result in a written off car at best - end of.

It is a risky road from that standpoint, even without the traffic.

Having hit a deer at 45mph in my MK1 I can vouch for this.

Its terrifying, expensive and you'll cr@p yourself!

I didn't actually cr@p myself, but then I am well hard!

Ok so anti deer bumpers fitted the reason i chose the time then is because less cars and the route taken will involve alot of Very rural roads so the chance of deer encounters are high. So please post up if you want Day or night? either will involve food and a natter.

Right al little scared last night having done the run to check timing etc so I got to the Basingstoke Tesco filled up on the old super99 drove over to the start point and set off at about midnight. Now if you have a look at my profile I have quite a subtle mr2 just wheel’s and suspension and a stock’ish quiet exhaust but nicer tone.

So expecting a nice quiet run no rain good visibility I was not expecting to be pulled over TWICE!
Once on the Basingstoke to Alton road and then on the Wickham to Portsmouth road! I was not happy both times random stop checks but apparently there has been a serious increase in boy racers racing and crashing on those sections of road causing lots of complaints from the locals. Breathalysed on the first and given a producer on the second even though I had had no alcohol for at least 6 days now.

Then on my way back up to Alton I had to Swerve for a fox and Just stop for a Deer as it just kind of stood in the road looking at me and didn’t move till I got within 10 foot of it.

Based on this madness I didn’t really get a good time out of my run and I certainly didn’t enjoy it. I can’t really give a decent estimate other than with both stoppages by the 5.0 roughly being about the same amount of time for people to catch up/mini smut stoppages it took about an hour and 25 minutes.

But based on the police being there and not being able to guarantee that its a one off I would suggest that it would not be a good idea to do a night run.

How does this Sunday Morning the 6th sound 11:00 at the supermarket At Point A. I’m pretty sure its a Tesco for those with the super 99 bug. ready to go 11:30ish and then meet at the start of the run stopping in the long slip road on the left after the junction at point B. regroup at the lay-by on C then at the Pub on the left at D finishing on top of Portsdown hill at E then either greasy spoon burgers from the van or pub behind to the left.
Sound ok?
