[All] [Generic] Toyota ForLife Coolant - rip off? or quality?

Post by shabz »

Is there a reason they can charge us over £15 per 5L?? Its pricey, but i'm wondering if there's any point in it or not...?

If i save £20 on coolant now by buying some cheaper halfrauds stuff and my rad blow up in a year or so then its obviously not a wise saving :D

Your thoughts on forlife? and the best alternative for the price?

Well, if tin A says ethylene glycol 15% in distilled water and tin B says ethylene glycol 15% in distilled water and A costs £50 and B costs £20 what would you call the person who bought tin A? ;)

My mechanic says that any ethylene based coolant is just fine. I'm sure that 'Forlife' is essentially the same stuff and I think it's wrong that dealers try and glorify their products to make them sound superior. I used plain water in my old N/A for over a year and it never caused a problem.

DING. Any ethylene based coolant is absolutely fine.

Just one point I wanted to make, its not called 'forlife' anymore its called; longlife.

worth noting that although any ethylene glycol based coolant is fine, it is preffered to mix it with de-ionised water .which is essentialy what forlife /longlife /halfords premix is .
the de-ionised water just helps reduce electrolitic corrosion between dissimilar metals such as metal headgaskets and aluminum heads .

we had a batch of marine engines with blown headgaskets very early in their life which were being run with ethylene glycol and tapwater which set up corrosion and rotted the headgasket sealing ring and pitted the head .using a premixed glycol and de-ionised water has stopped the problem

go look yourself! £15 for the green/red coolant and the new PINK stuff is twice as much because it's made to last 100,00miles

£32 for 5l is painful but when most cars require much less coolant than our MR2s you could see how they justify it. £96 for our cars is prob just abit OTT, especially considering 100,000 miles will outlast the rad etc and need to be drained anyway.

But anyway, the toyota longlife stuff for me.
