MK1 oil puff on startup.

Post by Scooter »

Just after a point in the right, or possibly right direction.

I get a puff of oil smoke on startup with my mk1 that seems to be worse the longer its left standing (after a couple of days the puff is significant / embarassing!)

no oil consumption problems and absolutely no evidence of oil burning at any other time. Car runs fine, no missing idling issues etc all sweet apart from the above.

i was thinking valve stem seals but there is an audible rattle for approx 1/2 - 1 sec on start up too, could this be piston slap (no idea TBH) or what?

Any input appreciated.......

i would say valve stem seals for the smoke puff in the morning.
Sounds like you have a bit of dry start, and that is caused by the oil draining back into the sump overnight. I thought mk1 oil filters had a valve in em to stop this happening?

Doesn't sound like anything to worry about tbh. They always sound a bit tappety on start up and then generally smooth out a bit.

yeh, not overly worried.....

Thing is I have a spare engine, that i know didn't do the same so i may clean up the head on that one a do a head swap at some stage. I rather do this than a full engine refurb and swap, but then also don't want to just do the head if i'd just be wasting my time in the long run.....

thanks and still lovin the car btw

Juts drive it as normal mate...if it knackers you have the spare ready to plonk in place. A nice thing to fall back on I guess..
