[Mk2] [Turbo] water temp gauge

Post by owai »

Hi i've owned my rev2 turbo for 2 weeks now.
and was just wondering when letting the car warm up it only goes a quarter of the way up is this normal or is there something wrong?

it has an xs power side mount intercooler in place of where the normal intercooler went not sure if this makes a difference.
doesn't seem to be any other cooling mods done.

any ideas would be gratefull :)

the intercooler has nothing to do with your water temperature....

it generally not a good idea to let the car sit there and get up to temperature..just creates heatsoak...

if the gauge doesnt go over 1/4, id say you need to replace the temp gauge sendor/sensor...
cheap, easy to do, if its not that, possibly thermostate, bit more expensive, and a bit tougher to do and takes a good while long...(as you have to rebleed the system to)...

With the thermostat you normally see the gauge dropping right down whilst driving along and then rising again when stopped in traffic. As stated try checking the temp sender.

no dont get me wrong i don't just let it sit i drive my car as a daily driver so don't have time to just let it sit i just drive it to work shifting just below 2k .
well i hope its an easy fix.. if you were me would you stay off boost completely then untill this is fixed? (i bviously bought the car for the turbo but dont mind granny driving as theres way to many speeed cameras anyways)
where can i buy replacement parts OEM? without going to mr T

Thanks for your helps guys guess i should have posted this up sooner!

ive had same thing on my car since i got it about 6 months ago (mainly the needle sits at the quarter mark, sometimes a little higher or lower), and i have been boosting around every day so i hope that it doesnt cause any damage...!!!
Anyone know if it should be fixed in a hurry (after 6 months that is?!)....

A tip for diagnosing if it's the thermostat that's stuck open is this:

Try to drive the car around town, so it's under load but there's not too much airflow going through the radiator. Then stop somewhere safe with a newspaper lol, and let the car idle for 10 mins or so. Might even be less if the weather is warm.

If the temperature gauge comes up to half way, the thermostat is stuck open. If it still doesn't move it's more likely to be the temperature sender.

hth :)

yes it should....
you wont actually be running at full power at all cause the ecu still thinks the car is cold and youll be running on the ecus cold start maps....

but my problem doesnt seem like a thermostat one :(

thats the ecu controlled one, not the guage one...
straight swap, may loose 1/4 of a cup of coolent when swapping them over, but easy...
