Track, race or road Mk1 - F800 EAM back for sale

Post by dgh.mr2 »

The car has now to be sold contrary to the earlier stop of the previous ad. - after the non-show of the promised funding/sharing that would have allowed me to keep it. Those who know the car will note that this is a great regret to me and provides an excellent car for any purchaser for track, race or road use (has MOT until next spring).

I have re-listed the copy of the previous ad. which gives most detail but am happy for any inspection etc. I am looking for c.£3,500 which is approx. one tenth of its build cost . . .

I could be interested in a px for a cheaper Mark 1 in decent condition but do need cash my way to begin to sort out my financial situation.

"F800 EAM For Sale - ideal race car project for Nippon Challenge, Toyota Sprint series, 750 MC etc.

For sale after the disaster of buying and selling my previous car at a £2000 loss + new costs of a refurb, just completed by KPM at c. £3000.

Fibreglass bodied MR2 Mark 1 road legal race car - as used sucessfully by Matt Jenkins in sprints/hillclimbs.

Regarded by some well known members of the MR2 community - e.g. see quotes on the site by Lauren or Matt - as the best handling MR2 they have driven e.g. "The best handling MK1 I've driven was Dave Hawkes (dgh) race car on Ledas, it felt so much more progressive and well balanced than any other MK1 I've been in." (LB - hope you don't mind me quoting this as it's already 'out there' but don't want to seem too cheeky - just desperate!) It has "steering to die for" (MJ) and incredibly sharp turn in and virtually no understeer.

A re-shell - and improvement - of Granville Williams ex-WRDC championship winning GT car. Weighs c. 850Kg (with more weight to come out - eg. if heater / dash etc. removed).

Fibreglass body beautifully made by Simon Gibson – NB. car comes with full set of moulds + 3 spares of all panels so buyer could sell/make new panels in any composite or build replica cars to recoup costs).

Seam welded shell by rally preparation experts PrepFab with weld in cage and additional triangulation front/rear impact bars (very strong and safe).

STACK dash, absolutely awesome Hi-Spec 310mm x 28mm 4 pot alloy calipers/brakes, 7" x 16" Speedline alloys with nearly new Toyo Proxes.

LEDA coilover suspension with specially machined uprights by Michael Flounders of Tollbar Racing ( renowned suspension guru in ClassicF3, Formula Renault, Renault Spider Championship, Group C Challenge, Ginettas etc. now running Damon Hill and Tom Walkinshaws' sons in Ginettas) fully corner weighted etc. and then set-up by William Hill - Thundersports Champion – and Michael over 2 days at Donington in summer 2002 where it lapped in 1m 23 sec with an interim 145 BHP engine on Yoko 539 tyres!

With 165 BHP it lapped Spa in 1m51s with Eugene O'Brien driving - compare with historic sports racers etc. and you'll see that is a fantastic time for a road legal 1600cc car.

The car is in great condition, has just been refurbished + has cost over £35,000 to build so if anyone wants the ultimate track/road MR2 or a race car please contact me with fair offers either at 01629 826652, by PM or via e-mail: [email protected]

The car is due back from KPM next week.

As I really do need the money urgently (mortgage term changes from 2yr low rate to God knows how high at the end of June) I am reducing the asking price to £3000 which is only the same as the cost of the refurb. - i.e. all the build etc. effectively for free!

Looking at the bills would show that this would be rather a bargain for anyone intending to turn their MR2 into a track or race car.

PS - Edwin if you are still interested could you drop me a pm, I have lost your details, sorry . . .

I've just suprised myself by realising that I'm actually interested in owning this car...!

Yes, apologies for that - just copied and pasted the text from the 1st ad. and didn't spot the moulds still being there (if they were I would have been asking a higher price as they were so valuable.)

There are still some spare, unused panels with the car though.

Well, that would be interesting - it would be good to see it go to someone with the wherewithal and ability to use it properly (don't know if you've spotted the link and put 2 and 2 together but it is the car I asked about a turbo transplant for before foolishly buying the Mk 1.5 that left me high and dry - the one I bought the traction control for before the refund you allowed!)

The car had been in heated dry storage at JSD for c. 2 years following its return from Matt.

So, before using it, I had it trailered down to KPM for a refurbishment, as it had been sat for aso long and had had a MOT notice on some corrosion on the front chassis (now removed and replaced with new metal).

I've copied the text from Kevin's e-mail invoice (?) below, the black text was his estimate and the blue bold stuff - if it shows - the final price after changes.

"Good news the car is finished, and has a new MOT, I just need to do a couple of minor wiring connections with the stack dash,

The changes to the original estimate are as follows,

Original with changes in blue,

Supply and fit 4AGE engine and MR2 MK1 Gear box £700.00

Supply and Fit original oil cooling system £75.00

Fit wiring loom fuses relays etc, coil, coil pack, fuel pump relays, injectors, etc, £225.00 + 15 hours labour @ 30.00 = £450.00

Welding of corroded/weakened areas (re. MOT on front chassis) £200-300 depending of what is found £285.00

Brakes fit new pads front and rear, remove all callipers and free off repair etc, Pads £ TBA front and rear replaced £160.00 The other work £240.00 = Clean in ultrasonic tank, re fit and align, replace brake fluid with new racing fluid,

S/H Driveshafts and cv/triball bearings £120.00

Doors allow around £60.00 to re-hang etc, 4 hours £120.00

Battery Race type Red Top £100 we had the battery recycled at a local battery company and now is 100% £35.00

Additional work Required etc,

supply and fit used fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel sender, and associated wiring and fuel piping etc, £250.00

Class 1V MOT £55.00

Total is £2715.00 less initial payment of £743.00 leaves £1972.00 to pay

Full detail of the history and build of the car can be seen at

Thanks very much or that!

I "know I would say this wouldn't I?" but it is a cracking car and I'm gutted to be losing it, but needs must.

Cheers

It seems that the car is now sold, subject to the cheque clearing, and so finally it seems that I will be moving on from MR2s and the MR2 world - once a few remaining items are sold (braking system, wheels, tyres, aero parts, panels etc. which I'll post up as several ads. over the next few days once I know just what the buyer wants.)

Sad, but unavoidable, so thanks to all those who have offered advice, help and support over the years.

All the best

David
