[Mk2] [NA] Scrapping noise over bumps at higher speeds

Post by Babboon »

I replaced the worn out good years on on my rear with some Falken FK452's last week but now when I go over certain bumps at over 75 mph (speedo speed) I get a scrapping noise from the rear right.

I have 8.5J Rota D1's running 245/40/17 and Bilstein B6 struts twinned with eibach pro kit springs which were fitted new about 2 years ago.

I got the wheels with part worn tyres and never had any issues before in the 6 months or so I've had them.
Does it sound like I'm just having issues with the new tyres because they have loads of tread on them and they stick out slightly from the arch (not found any marks on the tyres or bodywork yet) so I may need to get the arches rolled or could it be something more serious?

Its normally only me in the car so I haven't been able to see if I get the same problem on the passengers side if I have a passenger.

why are you going 75mph over bumps??? dont you think you should slow down a little???

sounds to me like there scrubing mate, if they stick out past the arhes a little bit and you go over a bump doing 75mph!!! then the wheels are obviously gonna go up into the arches a little bit...

cos its a 4x4 :clown:

Seriously tho, there's a couple of bits on the A41 dual carriageway near me which seem to have some pretty sharp changes in the road height which if I'm going at anything over 70ish I get the scrapping. The only other time I've had it was when I went over a fairly steep speed bump.

I was wondering if anyone else had experienced things like this as the combo of a 245/40 tyre on an ET35 aftermarket wheel seems to be fairly popular, maybe its cos its an 8.5J width.

i had the same issue but with a 9inch ET35 rear running 245x40. If you check the arch you should see the lip has a clean bit where the tyre has rubbed the dirt off. On mine, you could see where the tyre was being rubbed away too! :pale: One arch rolling session later and jobs a good un.
