Any one know if they ever plan to realease downloadable movies in HD?
(Bluray if you want to be pedantic but seeing is it's not on a disk I shall call it HD)

How come the files fit on a 360 HDD then? Pretty sure there in 1080 arent they? i havent really looked.

Yup, 1080 films in HD to download on the 360 already and have been for a while.

They usually take up between 5-6gb and self delete after a little while. It works out about the same as renting a bluray disc from Blockbuster.

Why did they need to invent bluray then if HD films could fit on a normal DVD ?

Must be some wicked compression on those films for the Xbox then Is it like of YouTube quality but bigger?

I'm not up on all the resolutions of HD but have downloaded a couple of BR movies and the whole of Jericho season 1 and 2 in HD.
You need a special codec to play which you can get for free, they came in the format mkv?? and I found on my pc, which is getting on a bit now, (amd 3600 64bit with 3gb ram, 32 bit windows xp pro) that things got a little jumpy with several programs running in the background.
Switching them off and using a different player sorted it out though but i've only just got a ps3 so I have no idea if the movies would have played on it, i'll have to try it next time I download one.

It also depends how you are downloading stuff. A couple of months ago I managed to reach 100GB of downloads for one month which was a little over my limit, the speed of things like limewire, and even most torrents i've used have been nothing short of keck, as have the beebs iplayer and 4od so I pay a little extra for a high speed connection to usenet. Can usually get about three 4.6gb downloads in an evening at speeds of between 3 and 6mb and I pay something like 25 euros for 75GB of download per month by paypal and that can be lowered or raised as needed. Tis nothing short of fab.

Going by the newer speeds rolling out across the country i'd say it's only a matter of time before you can get legit HD full movie downloads though it'll be some way off I should imagine, this is the UK remember.

This seems to have swayed off topic a little here.

I'm not talking about general movie downloads on PC's through limewire or any other source.

I'm simply asking if the PS Network has any plans to have downloadable HD films the same as Xbox Live does.

I think the Xbox ones are actually 720p although some may be 1080i but not sure if any are 1080p

Bluray Discs themselves are grossly oversized in terms of HD films. I think their main use will be games which will take up a lot more space.
Just because the disc can hold 50gb of data doesnt mean any where near that has been reached

As for the quality of the HD films you can download on XBL. It was good enough for me to subsequently buy the PS3 in order to watch Bluray films. I would have just got the HiDef Drive but we all know HD is as good as dead. I can see no difference in the quality of picture between the Bluray discs and the couple of films I have watched downloaded from XBL (300 and Matrix Reloaded)
I'm sure some geeks get their magnifying glasses out and count the lines or something sad like that but to any one else, both are equally as good.

Yes, Music also (eventually) This is the PS3 we're talking about

There's talk about official external USB HDD's for the PS3 to up storage for when PSTV rolls out but film/program producers are worried about how easy it will be to then take the HD movie/TV program you've downloaded/recorded onto the HDD, Hook it upto your PC then spread it all over the newsgroups and torrents etc so this has put things back.

Yes. Create a new user, then a new account.

Fill in the details similar to what you did originally, but put that you live in the States instead of the UK - you just need a valid zip code though. Think I put the zip code of the White House or something

Yes definitely. I was watching bits of that SCEE show - one part focused on Sony having marketed the PS3 as a games console foremost - they said now it's established in Europe they will now push its home media centre abilities to widen the market - they didn't give particulars on this but did say the planned rollout was within the next year, so I'd expect to see streaming music/downloadable movies and other utilities being available from PSN in the near future.
