Mongoose Exhaust tip Vibrations

Post by SuperRedMR2 »

Does anyone else suffer from vibes coming from the tips of their mongoose exhaust or even their magnex?

It happens when you rev the car, lift off, then there is an annoying vibration noise and sounds awful. Any ideas?

The welds on the chrome tips can go, causing them to vibrate and eventually fall off.

Its hitting the tow loop on the bumper, mine did.

go back to the join between the back box and the downpipe and twist the joint to piont the backbox down a little more. This should solve it.

Ditto what sparky said...mines doing the same. If you grab the tail pipes (when cold!) and give them a yank, you'll see it smacking on the tow bar. Spmetimes turning the 2 sections may sort it, otherwise, assuming it lines up correctly you'll need to 'adjust' the hangar brackets on the exhaust itself as there isn't enough clearance between the mounts and the pipes. They get bent in transit, so if you just bend them up slightly you'll increase the clearance and stop them banging. Or put washers under the mounting brackets....

Also check for wear in the rubber mounts for the backbox - over time the holes for the backbox hangers can wear to an oval shape, allowing the box to move fore and aft and vibrate against the chassis

My Magnex seems to do this and it is only 6 months old, It is definitely not hitting anything on the car, I only noticed it yesterday when someone else was reversing the car into a garage, It is just like a slight vibration on the tips (especially on fast idle when cold) just as superredmr2 says.

To be honest when I am driving it it is like a rasp and is not unpleasant but now I have heard it from outside it is bugging me especially as the exhaust is only 6 months old, may look at going back with it to Halfords to see what they say.

...I had exactly the sam problem. Turned out that I had a couple of issues:
1) back box connecting with the heat shield under load
2) centre mount striking the chassis cross member

Both these issues were ultimately cured by replacing the absolutely completely knackered exhaust mounts as these were allowing for massive play in the system and allowed me to accurately position the back box and move the centre bracket suficiently far from the chassis rail so it didn't touch when the engine was placed under load.

1. I borrowed an angle grinded from work with a cutting disc, and cut that MOFO in half lol

2. I have inspected the exhaust mounts. I was going to take one off, draw it up on computer, and get another two made, then find some rubber or something and make the hole smaller.

Just sounds so empty when u lift off.

I have emailed ricerocket to ask about my warranty though...as its a lifetime guarentee..

The exhaust mounts are not expensive from toyota IIRC. I thought that the rubber mounts slid inside the metal mount but when I received them I realised how wrong I was and how much mine had perished in the 20 years since they were fitted - the whole unit (metal and rubber) comes as one, unbolts and then bolts back up. By the time you have expended time, effort, and financial outlay you may as well have bought new - again all my own opinion of course... :-)

I bow to one's superior use of the EPC. I found it in the end...

Rang Toyota today, they cost £13 exc vat each. Not bad, but i really doubt that is why mine is sounding terrible. Must be the exhaust tips, or maybe even the flexipipe

Could be Resonance in the backbox. I had this on a cheap backbox off ebay. Sounded terrible like a rattle snake when you let off the go pedal.

Had a look at my notes from when I fitted mine: another problem I came up against was the end of the exhaust hanger very slightly touching part of the chassis, again causing vibration. Attacked it with a grinder and removed 5mm or so and it touched no more.

Mine did that way back, it was embarrasing and annoying (mongoose).. it was where the hanger hit the mount as previously said (in my case) but if it was that you'd know as it's a horrible din. All I did was adjust it and move the bracket it a bit or something (sorry for lack of detail but it was years ago)

I called the guy at ricerocketuk about it, and ive purchased another backbox thru the warranty, and sent my old one back, so when they find a problem with it, they'll refund me the money.

when i removed my old one, i gave it a shake, and you can hear material floating about inside it.
