I think you need to take 2 engine mounts off so you can lower
/ move the engine slightly

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] timing belt info
Search on here, there is a guide on doing it, engine doesnt need to be taken out, but 1 or 2 mounts do need to be removed, along with intercooler,

If you have A/C then the compressor needs to be moved out the way also i believe,

When changing the belt change both idler bearings and tensioner, id also go for a water pump too, not somthing you want to have strip down in the future,

You dont need to drop the engine but it would be a lot easier!! A lot easier!!!!!

The problem you will find is getting the tensioner back into place again and the gap between the side of the car and the timing belt area is tight.
Yes with the engine mount off and with a jack under the oil sump you can move the engine into a more suitable position but you still need some dexterous hands and lots and lots of patience.

Ive just finished putting a new headgasket and timing belt on
(literally fired her up for fisrt time again yesterday) and I can tell you I didnt drop the engine out but next time I will!

There is another way to remove the intercooler without having to remove the aircon compressor.
If you release all the brackets from the car, remove the top bracket from the intercooler
, then move the intercooler you can get to the setscrews mounting the lower bracket to the intercooler.
From underneath the car you can remove the bracket completely and then the intercooler will come out.

Couldn't agree more Conor.
Job is a total PITA!

EDIT: Just to confirm something regarding cambelt
/ water pump swap.
Toyota BGB publication reference RM179U1 is wrong, plain and simple.
The disassembly
/ assembly order is incorrect.
Please follow Jim's guide instead: http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/kb.php?mode=article&k=132

You don't need to remove the ac or the ic to do the cambelt.
It certainly would free up some space though.
Times I've found the need for the ic to come out, but not the ac

I usually remove 3 of the 4 engine mounts.

While I agree and haven't removed the ac compressor I found that you easily damage the ic if you leave it in place.
So I've ended up taking it out anyway.

I take it that's the left hand mount you leave in place.
I take it that the engine
/ gearbox can be balanced on a jack with a load spreader under the sump without toppling over then? Is that right?

Need to get my t-belt changed too.
How much
labour should I expect to pay for it? Also might get the water pump done too.
