[Mk2] [Turbo] Standard tyre profile on REV3 or REV4 turbo

Post by James Junior »

My car has a set of 17" aftermarket wheels and I think the tyres are too big as with standard suspension the car scrubs when I hit dips at speed.

What was the profile of the tyres on the standard car? I believe the standard wheels were 16"?

The standard Toyota alloy wheels for the 90-92 cars are:

Diameter 14" front and rear
Width 6" front and 7" rear
Offset 45mm front and rear
PCD: 114.3mm
Front tyre: 195/60 x 14", 29psi
Rear tyre: 205/60 x 14", 32psi.
The original tyres were Continental, but after poor reviews uni-directional Bridgestone Potenza RE 71s were fitted to the MR2, but now often replaced with the Yokohama A520's.

From 1992 onwards wheels are:

Diameter 15" front and rear
Width 6" front and 7" rear
Offset 45 mm front and rear
PCD: 114.3mm
Front tyre: 195/55 x 15", 29psi (Some owners prefer a more easily sourced 205/50 x 15" to reduce understeer)
Rear tyre: 225/50 x 15", 33psi.
Original tyres are Yokohama A-022's, and wear rate is high. Bridgestone S-02's are the usual replacement type.
Tyre wear is most rapid on the inside edges of the front, and outside edges of the rear tyres, if the suspension is correctly aligned.

If non standard alloys are fitted to the car, it is recommended that you keep two size differences between the front and the rear tyres - for example, using 17" rims 215 width tyres could be fitted to the front and 235 width tyres fitted to the rear. This helps keep the balance of grip front to rear roughly the same as with the OEM tyres.

hope this points you in the right direction...!!!

Standard rev2 onwards are: front 195/55/15, rear 225/50/15

There's a calculator here: http://www.tyresave.co.uk/tyresize.html
that will let you check equivalent sizes on different rim diameters.

Thanks for all the feedback - very helpful.

A big thank you to Leeroy - without your prompt for me to check the tyres I would have forgotten that I left my car unlocked with the roof off! #-o

Just been out and checked the tyres - we have a pick and mix selection!

The rears are:-

Kumho Ecsta Supra's 215 / 45ZR17 91W

Front right:-

Intensa 215 / 40ZR17 83W

Front left:-

Sunny SN3800 215 / 40ZR17 87W

All budget tyres then, though those Kumho Ecsta Supra's seem to get some decent reviews online.

I think when funds permit I'll be changing the tyres to Falken's as I;ve had a good experience with them in the past.

Any input regarding the above would be welcome!

Well my 2 p's worth:

You rears are pretty skinny, I'd up them to 245/35/17 or 245/40/17 when you can, and yes Falken are rated quite well by a few on here too, but get the 452's as they're the better ones.

Fronts are fine for size, ideally would be the same make for both sides ( and all round ideally) but if you can't afford to do all 4 together rears are more important, obviously.
