[Mk2] [Turbo] Car wont start :(

Post by Steve-O 2007 »

Got into my car Thursday to drop my mum off at work, started and ran fine. Got home, parked up, turbo timer counted down like usual. Got into it today to bring it around the back of the house to fit brake pads etc. Started first time and I got 10 meters and it cut out and wouldnt start :(. I thought the engine had flooded again so left it for 30 mins. Tried it again it started and then stopped instantly and wouldnt start again at all just turned over, left it for 10 mins turned the key and it started and again instantly cut out and again would just turn over after that, left it another 20 mins, started and cut out again etc etc. I Thought it might have been out of fuel so off to BP for some BP Ultimate, fired that in and again starts but then cuts out.

I remember the mechanic that did the cambelt said he had to use a jump pack to start it (car had been sitting for a week so lost some charge most liekly) so we decided to try jumping it off the BMW and it started first time! This left us a bit puzzled as the car was turning over fine on its own and didnt sound like it was flat at all. Left it for 5 mins, turned it off and went to start it again but again would only turn over! Connected BMW back to it and jumped it again and it started straight away so left it running for 10 mins. Gave it a few revs, dump valve was dumping off like normal and it all sounded and seemed fine but went to move it and it instantly cut out from 2,000 revs to nothing without warning (no splutter or anything just instantly off) and again wont start only turning over.

Car has had New Spark plugs, new distributer, new rotor arm in the last 300 miles and they look fine.

When started the car was ideling / revving fine with no spluttering or dodgy smoke

Checked under the oil cap for mayonaze looking stuff but nothing

Checked coolant water and that seems fine (little dirty looking due to the old coolant pipes)

Checked oil by the dip stick and thats all still fine and at the same level and clean looking.

No Error codes

What other symptons do you get with a blown head gasket? Car idles and revs fine when jumped...

Has anyone had a similar problem and know how to fix it? Realy need to try and get this done by Mon night :(

Thanks

If its starting and stopping intermittantly theres no chance it can be the cam belt. Once there gone, there gone, period.

It seems to me the battery may not have enough oomph to keep the car running. But it seems strange its turning over ok.

Try changing the battery, maybe the one from the BMW you mentioned. As you know thats all good.

Other than that, im stumped too mate.

jumped it again and it started first time, turned the car off after 5 mins and went to start it again but nothing, left it for 5 mins, went to start it again (without jumping it) and it started trying so pressed the accelerator and it started but was spluttery untill it hit 2000 revs. Left it idling for 5 mins and went to move it, started moving it and it just decided to cut out. Went to start it and nothing just turning over. again left it for 5 mins turned the key and it started trying so again pressed accelerator and it fired up spluttery untill hitting 2000 revs..

Disconnected the battery and when reconnecting the Negative terminal it sparked when connecting to the battery, is this normal or does it indicate a short somewhere?

checked the spark plugs and they are sparking fine.

checked the fuel pump by crossing them points and you could hear that humming

Water is getting hot quite quick, the pipe running from the coolant cap is very hot but the radiator pipes in the front of the car are stone cold like the thermostat isnt working so need to sort that.

Any ideas?

Thanks

tried a new battery and still nothing :(

Can smell the fuel comming through but it just doesnt want to fire up. Spark plugs are sparking.

This is realy annoying me now, took thursday / friday off to change the pads + starter motor and have some GTA time but been wasting my time with this problem now    :(

Thinking about just getting another and swapping my kit etc over and stripping this one to try and get my money back but then after looking under it it just seems a waste as its mint, near enough all looks brand new but it wont start!! :(

I looked at it when it was broken down on my drive while I was moving it to get around the back of the house and just had to take a pic, I was angry with it but just couldnt stop looking at it, Its definatly a car I want to keep so dont worry, this hasnt put me off MR2's.. :D -

It was stuck there for 3 hours untill someone could help me push it, it had to stop on an uneven bit of the drive didnt it hehe :P

Just a thought,

If there is fuel, and spark...... where is the air? We need all three to run!

Check the wires under the rubber boot which clip into the afm... could be one loose??

It could be an intermittent problem so could've been a coincidence everytime you started off the BMW :thumleft:

It happened to me, you dont know till you try!

thanks for all the help problem sorted :thumleft:

got a message from Tim on the xxxx board and he said to check the earths on the Manifold so while I was at work my dad fiddled with that thick earth wire on the manifold thats running into a little black connection box and then to the chassis and it seemed to start up no problem :D -

Image

I noticed when I got home quite close to that thick wire theres also another wire (Well 2x wires going to the same point) on the manifold and that was loose so tightened it up incase that was also causing problems.

So far its running 100% fine

Its annoying how them 1 or 2 wires have caused me to waste 5 days off work lol :shock :shock

Thanks
