my gripes with installation and upgrading HDDs is thats not what consoles are about.

its getting too close to PC territory and the average joe bloggs guy doesnt wanna mess around. otherwise theyd probably upgrade there PC.

how much space do PS3 games take up on a bluray tho? games like GT5P and GTA?

pffft learn to drive:P pull the hand brake and THEN hold the normal brake a little but give it full gas. you will stay in a straight line then well a straight drifting line facing the way u want to go. try it and see how it works out :thumleft:

The driving in all the other 3D GTA's is OK. I even fired up San Andreas on the PS2 to check it wasn't me and yes, I think they've ballsed it up a bit on IV. I clipped a kerb last night and the car went hurtling through the air like a Dukes of Hazzard stunt :-k Very strange behaviour.

But it is the only way forward at the moment. Consoles get more powerful and have more internal memory to use and the games obviously get bigger and more data needs to be tranfered (quickily). The 360 copes fine with the DVD drive but as we all know the Blu-ray wasn't ideal for games like GTAIV.

Memory sticks would be cool but they wouldn't be very secure.

Not sure on the size of the games. I've read that if you install Linux then you can use the PS3's own Blu-ray drive to look at the contents of the discs but i've not put Linux on it yet so this could be 100% incorrect :D

i dont have a ps2 to play it on, unless its on PC?

is there planes in this one?

Andy, what about drives that ARE fast enough to read on the fly. I kno bluray discs read differently but they must have quicker drives by now.

the ps3 is 2x isnt it?

edit - did a quick google and samsung launched a 6x back in jan so there definitely quicker.

if that is fast enough then why would HDDs be so important in the future for games? apart from how they are now with DLC and demos etc.

Fast yes but are they reliable enough for consoles that get constant abuse, Do a 10 hour session on GTAIV and the laser is reading and jumping around the disc constantly. From personal experience i hammered my PS1 and PS2 and had to change lasers on those on more than a couple of occasions.

Googling the PS3's Blu-ray drive says that it's 2x read has similar transfer rates to a 12x read DVD drive, As you say they read a different way. TBH i don't understand why some games (GT5P/Everybody's Golf for example) need to do such huge installs and should be optional for people with small drives/less room. GTAIV yes, A huge free roaming map that is way too big for internal memory so the data required changes constantly.

With PC style game update's and DLC HDD's are above all secure. Memory sticks/Internal writers are open to abuse. The PS3's firmare controls what you can and can't have access too. Saved games/Music/Movies/Photo's are copied freely between SD cards but you can't access GAME data (which includes games/installed game data/DLC/downloaded demos etc) I also believe the PS3 HDD is encrypted to only work in the machine it's installed in so you can't just hook it up to a PC and access it's data.

I'd wager a 'must-have' game being out within the next 24 months that requires an HDD on the 360, so core owners will *have* to install/upgrade an HDD - PS3 owners won't have to as it already has one inside - so using that argument surely that makes the 360 'not what consoles are about' ..?

You don't have to though, the option is there for those of us that want to - which I prefer. Other users can simply delete data for stuff they no longer play/watch.

Don't know - probably no where near its capacity, IMO BluRay was a future proofing technology (e.g. not essential at this exact moment in time) I'd imagine BluRay will come into its own with media laden games that require a lot of FMV etc in the near future, by which time the gap between the 360 and PS3 will widen ever more - which is good for us all as it forces MS to develop a new console sooner - then putting heat on Sony to develop PS4 sooner etc - technology would move no where without competition and the need to improve.

I also believe that with the next gen of consoles dvds/blurays etc will be a thing of the past - they will ALL use HDDs exclusively (solid state or otherwise), using either USB keys to install software and/or (more likely) downloadable content. (e.g. can freely download any game, but need a hardware key to unlock it (maybe a USB dongle), making it portable between devices)

360's with no hard drive are just an option for people with less money to burn. I think it was a good idea personally.
Not to mention, when my old 360 died, I simply bought a new one and stuck the hdd on it. Why would i want to be forced to buy one at considerably more cost when I dont need it?

According to Sam, changing HDDs isn't what consoles are about though...

I think Sony decided to build a higher quality unit that would stand the test of time rather than needing to replace it every year or so, why should I be forced to replace a badly made console at considerable cost? :p

Yeah thought it was just me at first, until a mate at work said the same thing. I think they got the default settings a bit wrong

Lets stop comparing consoles now please and lets just talk about the games.
