Custom Made Roofscoop

Post by Martyn »

I have a custom made roof scoop on my 2, which has a built in intercooler which sits behind the rear window. It fits perfectly and looks a LOT better than the usual airscoops (which in my opinion look a bit ugly).

I've been thinking about taking a mould of it and marketing it myself if anyone would be interested.

The pipework simply goes through the little side panels next to the engine lid, it's just a matter of cutting two holes (one each side) and running the pipes through. The chap I bought the car from made this himself, and I love it. It was one of the first things that caught my eye to be honest. The intercooler hes used is about twice the size of the original one, and now has the benefit of having nice cold air blasted onto it directly from the roofscoop.

Here's an exisiting photo with the scoop fitted ...

Not bad, but the flow of air normally comes up from the engine cover. The flow from that scoop could actually interfere with the normal airflow and detract from performance.

roof mount sounds interesting though, and it's gotta be better than having the i/c sitting right beside a hot engine ... anybody else any thoughts on this ?

It certainly looks cool

I'm not sure airflow is a big issue/problem - after all the usual type of airscoops channel air down to the existing i/c. Plus the fact that the i/c is now outside the engine bay means it's cooler from the start.

Cant you have 2 ducts on the roof, one to the intercooler and one to the air filter like a forced induction kit. This would make a big difference to the temp reaching the air filter and get round the air flow issue

=P~ Love it, did you have it made for you, or did you produce it?

It was handmade by the person who owned the car before me. As I said earlier up in the thread, I'm thinking of taking a mould of it and possibly selling it to anyone else who might be interested. This is obviously a unique mod at the moment.

In answer to the visibility/engine cover question - yes, it does reduce rear vision a bit, but then you still have your wing mirrors. Having a rather large spoiler on my car means you can't seem much out the back anyway. The engine cover problem was overcome by removing the hinges and making the cover removable. So now it just slots in and can be removed completely. Which actually gives a little more access to the engine in most cases. The entire scoop/intercooler assembly can also be removed easily by removing a few bolts and disconnecting the hoses.

Thats very nice and a really good idea. You say that the IC is double the size of the standard one; so could you make one for the standard ic but have it smaller. As someones already mentioned, i dont theink the rear view is too great (from that pic) and also looks as if the engine lid will not open. Bar that it really is good quality work. =D> =D> =D>

Charge cooler

Post by George@max »

The roof mount idea looks good and I was considering one myself but in the end I went for a Rogue Systems charge cooler.

The results were impressive as I got an extra 25bhp just by fitting it without having any sort of remap.

And this was on a revision 1 1991 turbo

are you by anychance the chap on page 97 of Max Flower ?
my purple "conversion" was parked up infront of yours at Rogues..

was your 25BHP increase with the same boost settings as before ?

charge cooler

Post by George@max »

Yep, Nothing changed except the addition of the charge cooler.

It was dyno'd directly before and directly after the installation and showed an increase of around 25bhp.

It then went off to Thor Racing for a ECU upgrade and remap.

The car is now running a Link XLEM and has been dyno'd at 320bhp at the flywheel.

The roof has been painted Ford Panther black, while the body has been done wth a red base coat and a Gemini flip top coat, so yeah, pearl.

thats actually not that bad most scoops look like xxxx! but that is nice tho a few problems

1. how does that help the air flow as it seems to be blocking it.
2. can u still see out the rear window??

apart fron that very nice

Looks great!

I was thinking about that to, but then to place a radiator in it for a chargecooler.

I like the look of a scoop more to the T-roof

air flow?

Post by schweggs1 »

The air flow through the intercooler should be excellent! I really like the idea. The air through the engine bay doesn't make a difference at all. If the air moves upward through the engine bay it will cavitate between the engine lid and the cooler housing, not go through the cooler. If anything it will marginally improve the cars friction co-efficient.
GREAT mod!
what would something like that cost?(estimate for the unashamedly skint)
