[Mk2] [Turbo] Toyo T1R in std sizes

Post by Extubby »

I have had these fitted to the rear of my car now for a few weeks, have messed around with tyres pressures and hate them, they are utter sh**.
I like the grip but feel like I am driving a Citroen Dianne with the amount of body movement you get through the sidewall. There is poor stability at speed.
Will be looking for some 16'' wheels and better tyres soon.

thats strange I really like em, I run 36psi in the back and 34psi front.

I find em nice and predictable but I suppose its all down to each individual guess you'll have to splash out on a set of 16's

I have tried 36,37,38,39 and it gets better but still such a loose feeling. Under normal slow driving it's not that bad, push on a bit and it feels bad. If you are really pushing on it's awful, feels dangerous.

Not being funny but what are you using to check those pressures? Not a garage forecourt gauge I hope (I found my local one to be about 5psi out!!)? I found I had to go to 40 (max is 44 so I'm just in the 90% safe bracket) at the rear initially to get mine 'right' but have been able to reduce these over the year or so to about 36.5, fronts started at 36 now down to 33. Have to say I find them fabulous but maybe they just work really well in combination with standard old shocks and my Fensport lowering springs. I reckon as you stiffen the suspension the tyre wall plays a more important part in providing the 'ease' the chassis needs so little bumps etc. don't throw it offline or make it feel 'twitchy'.
I've also heard they are covered with the slippy stuff that gets em out the mould so remain very 'slippy' for the first 2/300 miles till it wears off... mine were. Persevere mate, think you'll find they come to you...

I am using a digital gauge I have.
I will try 40 but really cant see it taking the wishy washy feeling away.

By the way what do you think of the fensport springs? Got any pictures of the car with the fitted?

How long have you had the Toyo's on? I can't understand why people go on about having to increase the pressures. I run 32 front and 35 rear and it feels spot on. I admit they were a little wallowy for the first 200 miles or so but since then they've been very grippy and predictable. You can really push these tyres in the dry.

Hey again Ad.
As Dawolf has said bear with them and get some miles on them... they will come to you. I increased pressures but only for the first 3mths or so over which period I gradually brought them down. They're still about 3/4 psi over Toyota recommended pressures now but so what?
The Fensport springs have impressed me by the way, you considering getting some? You can see before and after pics in a thread I started in the members profiles section... about 14/15 from the top, shows the drop v. well. Ride quality has suffered of course and I'd say it's JUST still OK for UK roads... have to say though the massively improved body control (not to mention the look) makes it worthwhile, at least for me. :thumleft:

i'm pretty sure i wrote a near identical thread about 6 months ago when i fitted them to my rear wheels. at first i was appalled, but after a couple of weeks they absolutely transformed & i'm now more than happy with them. i'm not running much more than standard pressure either.

yup, I found the car was more boat like than car like when using toyo's in std sizes. No amount of tyre pressure changes made them feel better.

Seems some folks love them and some folks hate them, me I hate them lol

Another Toyo hater here. Dunlop SP9000s :thumleft: but often hard to get hold of (they must make them in batches). Even the old Yok A022s I found better than the Toyos. Didn't notice any difference as they wore either, although a friend (IIRC he had a VX220) said they got to decent grip just as you got down to the tread limit ](*,)

SP9000s are a very old tyre now, so getting hold of them might be tricky.

as said by others mine were 38 on the rear 36 on the front then when the greasy xxxx came off dropped the pressure down to 35 on the rear 32 on the front, i do think thought that toyos are one of them tyers you love or hate lol

I have to say that I've recentely put on a set of Toyos on the rear and I can't fault them. They're a 50 profile with 225 width on a standard 15 wheel. It grips like the proverbial and is actually giving me a bit of my nerve back after spinning and writing off my last REV3.

Saying that, my previous '2 had Nankangs on it, so mountain bike tyres would feel good in comparison. #-o

I'm now quite relgious about tyres!

That's strangely similar to me mate. I used to have Nankang's which were terrible and I feel part of the reason I span my old turbo aswell. Since having the Toyo's I've felt much more confident again, it's mainly in the wet you notice better tyres.
