mr2 mk1 what is it worth?

Post by madman2 »

This is owned by elderly gentleman and he bought it from toyota brand new, car has been rust proofed from new. has full service history and looks and drives like new.

Never welded or damaged in anyway, kept in heated garage and has genuine 33k. Every mot and service bills available, not a mark on bodywork. Chap who owns it is ex army officer now retired.

It's worth what someone is prepared to pay for it! Despite it looking very good (from the pics) it's highly unlikely that there's no rot on the car so it's still going to need some TLC!

Personally I'd expect the asking price to be between 3k and 4.5k. Someone may be prepared to pay a little more for such a low mileage, one owner example?

By comparison I've just bought an 88' MK1b T-Bar with Leather (49,500 miles) - One elderly couple have owned the car from new, FSH, all the bills and old MOTs - Complete with toolkit, tbar bags and shades, handbooks, new owner pack etc. Car has been kept in centrally heated garage from new BUT in 2003 the car went back to their local Toyota dealer to fix the small amount rust that was showing through on the rear arches and front wings. They ended up having new wings all round, drivers side B-pillar fixed, T-Bar header rail treated and a fresh coat of paint... total bill was £3100. That was all done when the car had 34k on the clock.

I've just bought the car and paid under 3k for it. I thought that was about the right price as it's just had a cambelt, new water pump and alternator (it also has 12months tax and mot!).

Maybe someone will buy at 6k.... but it might take a while to sell!!!

If this is the car I think it is the owner has been trying to sell it for at least a year or more, he was ex-army and lived down south somewhere, possibly the south coast? He was advertising it on the MR2 Drivers Club site for ages and was originally asking £7500 for it. I enquired about it before buying the car I have now but never got to actually see it however he did email lots of pictures and it looked very nice although not quite worth what he was asking IMHO.

what is it worth?

A common question at the meets and the shows, I've seen mid 20k mileage mint ones go for between £3k-£4.5k but seen 40K examples hit £5k. Mileage seems to not be a priority over condition in this area, original blemish free paint, and a perfect interior would be heaven at 50k! I comes down to what a buyer is willing to pay on the day and what the seller is willing to sell for, simple as that.

If the seller has had the car for a long time, they are usally not in any hurry to part with it. I'd put it up on the Mk1 club website, I've seen a lot of cars at meets aquired this way.

This one, being a red T bar with leather, ticks all the summer boxes, I'd ask for offers over £4000.

But what do I know?

Was your NSX a yellow one? I'm sure I remember seeing that plate.

doubt there will be much of a que forming with people having £6K to spend on a MK1
car could well be worth it but if there aren't buyers out there with that sort of cash to spend (especially when there are tons of good usable cars for less than half that!) then it could take ages to shift

Madman : Yep - I'm metalhead on the DC2 and DC5 Forum. I really regret selling the DC2 now and I'm keeping my eyes open for another tidy example! I had thought of getting a DC5 Integra but the loaded tax (£400 a year now... and rising next year again!) and extra insurance costs (import!) have put me off.... I'd probably only do 1000 miles a year in it so it's a lot of cost for an occasional use car!

Spud : My NSX was a Red Targa. Dan (DanTheMan) had the yellow one you've probably seen?
