Upgrading speakers

Post by dawolf »

Recently got a powerful JVC headunit, now it feels like the standard speakers are struggling a bit. Would cheap aftermarket speakers make much difference or is it best to pay more? I've seen toxic and kenwood ones going cheap. I'm gonna stick with the standard subs as I mainly listen to rock as opposed to bassy music. Also, how easy is it removing the door card to replace them? Any advice appreciated.

can't really advise on speakers, as my car doesn't have the active subs, so I don't know how good they are.

I upgraded the front door speakers to some infinity components, and there was a lot of improvement, but my head unit isn't really stretching them enough - to get the full sound quality from them I'd need to amplify the signal. In summary then, yes upgrade them, but there's little point spending £hundreds if you're not after a full on system.

As for removing door cards, I can help. First, have a look at the bgb- http://www.mr2-tech.com/bgb.htm. in the mechanical section will be something on removing the door fittings.

A couple of things to note (from experience and posts on here)

don't lever the drivers window control module out of the door with a screwdriver first. Leave it in the door, and unclip it from behind after the door card is off partially. This will reduce the chance of you snapping the top clip on this unit and having it rattle around for ever more.

Removing the wing mirror screws can be tricky if the screws stick, as the screws tend to round rather than unscrew. To get at the tweeter, you only need to undo the front most screw (of three) though, which saves you having to worry about the other 2. Drilling out wing mirror screws is not much fun.

This will probably make more sense when you've looked at the BGB. Stick more queries on here if you get stuck, but a search should come up with a lot of useful info too.

Tried that link but can't see any info on how to remove the door cards. Could someone briefly explain how to do it. Thanks.

Right, there is five screws to undo, 3 at the bottom of the door card, 1 holding the door release surround in place and one is facing you below the wing mirror side of the panel
then pull the door release surround off and pop out the door handle the panel is then held in place with plastic clips round the edges pull the card away from the door slightly.
You will have to unclip the window control panel and curtesy light and lift the panel off over top edge
That shoud be it
