Removal of front reinforcing bar!

Post by KMK11 »

Am in the process of removing or at least trying to remove the front reinforcing bar...unfortunately I'm not having much luck! :?

The problem is the two 17mm bolts which are refusing to budge (theres a small amount of rust on them but nothing in comparison to some of the others which I've already removed).

I've been swinging out of the two bolts...even had some extra weetabix this morning but all to no avail! ](*,)

Am gonna invest in some WD40 tomorrow in conjunction with plenty of spinach for dinner tonight and hopefully that'll do the trick!

Am I doing something wrong? Or does anybody have any other advice/tips of the trade etc? I'd be really gratefull for any advice...

Cheers :thumleft:

lots of wd40/plusgas type stuff. a very well fitting socket (hex not multi fit) and a nice long breaker bar. what you seriously dont want to do is round them off.

Everytime I'veremoved these bolts I used an old rachet that had been welded solid with a long bar over the end. Also use a decent hexagol socket. HTH

blowtorch and a hammer! and then a really big breaker bar with a scaffold pole on the end of it

what do the bolts go into? id be as concerned at the risk of them shearing as rounding them off

Cheers Guys,

I think tomorrow (weather permitting), I'll try the WD40 plus longer lever method...although I'm fresh outta scaffold poles, I'm sure I can rustle something else up which'll suffice!

...if that fails...I'll be getting out the angle grinder!

Thanks for all your help

That will just knacker your torque wrench... or at the very best put the calibration out :?

6 point socket (surface drive even better) as mentioned above is a good idea.

always worth a quick bit of effort to tighten before trying to undo - sounds wrong but often works..

i used a breaker bar and trolley jack handle..

Use a 1/2" drive socket set would be my primary tip! Good tools are worth their weight in gold...but appropriate tools even more so. 3/8 drive a bit weedy for a manly man applications like stuck 17mm bolts, though would probably do it with a cheater bar (like the aforementioned jack handles) if they were of a resonable quality. I bent a socket wrench once trying to undo a stubborn hub nut using a 5ft cheater bar, so tools need to be upto the job!!
My technique was....
Plenty of plusgas, bang the bolts with a hammer and bar to shake the rust loose a bit, more plusgas, a cup of coffee, then unscrew cos you're double 'ard:D Grrr. Manly.

A big THANK YOU to everybody for your advice :thumleft:

I'm very glad to report that the bumper bar is no longer on my car \:D/ some WD40 & a longer lever did the trick! :D :D :D

Will have the new one on Fri courtesy of MrT, not cheap at £133 but thats another story & I suppose a small price to pay for some extra peace of mind!

Once again...many thanks!!!

I have just ordered one off MrT and got 15% for saying I was a member of this forum. Took some arguing though as bloke only wanted to give 5% to start off with. Had to use some heat on mine to get it off brought a blow touch from halfrauds for £10 good Investment for the future.
