The beginning of a long journey

Post by GhostWKD »

Right so time to start this from the top for my new tubby '2 :)

picked it up off a fellow imoc member last weekend needs bits sorting before it's ready for mot :) plate wont live on the centre panel btw its just there as one of the bolts on the plate holder rounded off and not got around to it yet, and when i had the car with no plate on the back my neighbour phoned the police (long running history with her) which resulted in a stern talking to about changing the identity of the vehicle supposedly

Anyway enough babbling, few issues atm (please see mechanical section if you can help with these)

Issues before mot:
1) bulbs which need changing here and there
2) power steering (though this doesnt keep the light illuminated so it may be ok for a pass?)
3) new number plates needed (ordered)

General issues i want to sort:
1) Headlight kind of loose? -> but fine when parked at a standstill so should be ok with mot
2) new battery
3) investigate knocking from rear susp (only at slow speeds when gbox warmed up only moving forwards under load - even slight and also only when turning?)
4) boost pressure sensor... although tried my spare with no change :(
5) leading on from above get a working boost gauge either std or fit GReddy gauge

Parts i want to fit (no particular order)
1) Apexi induction from old tubby
2) 3" stainless downpipe from old tubby
3) Headunit from old tubby
4) Possibly swap the HKS exhaust for my nur spec from old tubby
5) GReddy gauges to A Pillar
6) XS Power IC
7) Blitz EBC
8) probably loads of random bits too like led bulbs instead of normal bulbs just about everywhere etc

Anyway pics as is atm :D

not too sure to be completely honest, it was sold to me as having coilovers but im pretty sure it doesnt, am waiting till it goes in for mot to take a look at a few things while its up on ramps, also want to find out why its 'bouncing' more than it should, though if they're adjustables or coilovers then in theory it could be badly setup suspension otherwise something else for me to look into :D

It looks too low for just springs to be honest. So it probably is coilovers. You can adjust the damping level of some coilovers, but when you say bouncing what do you exactly mean? If you were to press down on one of the corner struts does it bounce up and down for abit or just return to normal? Could be that you coilovers are in need of a service or even rebuild?

when you push down on all 4 corners it feels fine, but driving it it tends to bounce when there is a dip in the road :( not so bad on the slower speed roads but on dual carrigeway it bounces quite a bit... will be investigating shortly :D

ok looks like when viewed the car in rain and skipped checking coilovers i made first mistake... by the looks of it the car is actually on chopped lowering springs :(

Have booked it in for a MOT on thursday, hopefully the num plates will turn up in time and the suspension will get it through mot...

with any luck as long as i can get 12 months mot on it i'll be alot happier when spending cash on it :)

Just to followup for this... it failed mot :( on bulbs here and there, blowing exhaust, all 4 springs being cut and a few minors like a slightly sticking brake caliper

Have a full set of 40mm springs ready to go on... the current ones when you jack up the car the spring is actually loose... looks to have had 2 coils cut off of lowering springs :-s also got a huge bollocking from the mot tester for cutting the springs  but to be fair as far as he knew it was me that cut them i guess.

Springs will go on when get a chance, and have got a set of new "import sized" plates to go on :D but will wait until its through mot to fit these :)

Also removed the nur spec from my old tubby :D so will probably have the HKS off on saturday and possibly even be playing with springs sat/sun :D

few new pics as well :D

it was bought off of someone on here who bought it to fix it up

before that it looks to have been someones track car, its had a off at some point in its life and has eyelets for harnesses on the drivers side

mini update: nur spec now polished as much as i can be bothered to do before fitting, maybe once its mot'd i'll have the drive to finish it off but for now its v v shiney anyway :D

Well yest:

Swapped crappy K&N Filter for my Apexi induction
Finally got the nur spec fitted to the new tubby and swapped over a load of chassis > exhaust mounts from one '2 to the other as they looked worn :D

not very good pics as car still in air etc but you get the idea... will get better pics when do the suspension

though finished the day on a low.... oil has been majorly over-filled, will be getting some of that drained out asap! could be the hill its on though :)

update with no pics unfort...

springs done fogs re-wired as the wiring was well useless tbh... then it went in for its mot...

failed on silly list of things but none of which picked up on before (by a renault main dealer)

so spent yest first going for mot and failing, then getting new tyres on the front, then coming back to mates and fitting a load of split pins to random bits and freeing up a sticky caliper

having a bit of welding done today (someone took a angle grinder to rear subframe at some point in its life) and then tomorrow needs a steering gaitor before can go for its re-test

also decided coming back from mot its definately misfiring and hesitating then clearing up from about 4,5k-5k

no error codes though, but no working boost gauge so cant see what thats doing... will probably look at swapping the rotor arm and dizzy cap and see if it makes any difference and go from there

Mot'd and taxed and all road legal :D

springs new vs old... both are lowering springs, shows you how much has actually been cut off :o

Image

bit of grinding was needed due to bu88ered rear arm fixings, had to remove the captive nut inside the subframe on both sides as it was loose giving a bit of play in the arm on one side (was a bent bolt!) :(

Image

then a bit of welding to close holes all back up again etc

Image

(and more grinding to get rid of the welds after lol)

and then back on the floor on all 4 wheels finally :D

Image

Image

running problems seem to have cleared up as well, gear changes are crunching a bit but overall the car seems to be doing ok (also need to look into a dodgy engine management stylee light... but its not the proper one as thats yellow this one is red (erk!))

still on the whole a productive weekend, esp seeing as things got sorted with my ex from up wigan way etc
