Stalling Every now and again

Post by W0mbat »

Hello all. When i pull up to stop and put the clutch in my revs drop really low for a second, sometimes the rev counter hitz zero, the dash lights flash on and then it picks up again. other times the car stalls, but not all the time. but the revs always drop to below normal idle momentarily. I think it is more likely to stall if have accellerated then have to stop and get the clutch in. Other than that the car runs fine.

i also get the occasional backfire, but i have recently had my CAT removed. The car has also had a Dump Valve that vents to atmosphere but that's been there since i bought it three years ago and this idle thing is fairly new, like last month or so.

any thoughts?

PS. my coolant was recharged recently by Mr T and the levels are spot on, i know airlocks etc can cause rough idle...

I had exactly the same problems as you unitll I ditched the atmospheric dump valve that I had and fitted a standard Toyota BOV. All stalling/popping problems were solved! It wont take you long to fit a std BOV to see if it cures your problem.

hmm i have the same problem as you except mine drops to only about 600rpm then picks up back to around 850. It also happens more often like you say when I've accelerated and have to push the clutch in quickly to stop.

Though it was TPS (havnt got round to checking it yet) at first but it could also be an air leak? (stock BOV though)

Yeah, remove the atmospheric dump valve and refit the stock one, I tell you fellar, the stock recirc is the best there is.

The dump valve is situated obviously after the AFM, which measures how much air has been induced, the reason for the popping etc is because your starving the car of air which the ECU thinks it has induced, so by dumping this air to atmosphere your actually causing your engine to run rich, the reason the recirc recirculates back into the system is for that very reason, so dont be fools and refit your stock recircs or you'll damage your engines eventually. ](*,)

Good to see this post.

FWIW, some Rev1 and 2 cars will run with a dump to atmos valve, but most will hesitate when you're shifting gears as the ECU is adding fuel for the air it has measured through the intake - but which has just been dumped, and so it runs too rich.

Personally, I'd keep the standard Recirc BOV. I've heard you can get adapters for Apexi SSQ BOVs which recirculate the air as well as making nice noises.

FWIW, my Roadster Turbo project is going to have a recirc dump valve on it ..

BenF ive seen some people recommend the hks ssq as the only alternative
for rev 1's and 2's but its very divided some say there has been no difference
others went back to standard

HKS SSQV Blow off Valve (Super Sequential Blowoff Valve) Recirc Fitting

HKS SSQV Re-Circulation Fitting inserts enable the SSQV to re-route discharged compressed air back into the intake stream to create a closed loop system to prevent bogging / stumbling of rich air/fuel ratio conditions in mass-air sensor equipped vehicles.

I might buy one http://www.j-w-racing.co.uk/acatalog/L_1274.jpg
