I have progressive / lowered springs with KYB's & polybushes. So from what others have said it appears I must have the FIRM version of KYB's. Because the ride over bumps is very unforgiving, & there is hardly any movement on bounce test.
I'll have to change shocks again. So whats the best for road use? Koni's?

My car is not yet on the road but I've just fitted KYB's, whiteline front and rear anti roll bars, those droplinks you get off ebay and full polybush kit and I can't wait now hearing from all these good reports, I've done the bounce test and there isn't that much travel, I hope it's going to be seriously good.

Just got to put my engine back in and drive, can't wait.

Cheers guys, sounds like this is also my prob...Rootes, which trader is that on ebay do you know?
I'm not concerned about spending money on my car, its just that I don't have any to spend!! The bodywork has set me back over 3K with various repairs in the last year trying to stop various leaks (etc), so although I know the suspension needs sorting I haven't got the readies to get what I's really want, just need to do the minimum to make it safe - and at the moment it handles like an elephant...

the rears came as GR-2 and the fronts as Excel-G (black painted) (US KYB website says that for some application excel-g will be supplied instead of GR-2

Its well worth it Kooga. My handling when it was cack, sounds just like yours, but mine was getting to the point where something was gonna give, it was like that for a few months, before it came unavoidably noticable that something was amiss.

I feel that once a mk1's suspension is sorted out the confidence it gives you is inspiring.

When I'm out in mine I usually end up scaring the passengers half to death, but it not because I drive like a fool, its because the chassis has go so much to give and is so exploitable.

Even driving at 7/10 of what I'm capable of, on a twisty back road I'm so much faster than the other stuff on the road, it can be quite scary how quickly you end up catching the stuff in front.

Obviously its not the fastest thing on the road, but given the age and engine size, its a giant slayer.

To everyone else, including my other half, it must seem like I'm driving like a lunatic, but it just so isn't. I feel I'm in total control and the car is well within its limits. I just wish the rest of the traffic would get a move on.

Don't know if this will help anyone else who may have the same problem, but it wasn't really noticeable until I changed the tyres. Previously it was nice and slidey, which was fun, but not good grip...as soon as I put a set of reasonable grippy directional tyres on, drives noticeably badly! Leaps around all over the place.
