Auto vs Manual.

Post by whitemr2ladyagain »

After a recent conversation about auto's, I would be interested to know, the difference in performance figures between a standard manual MK1 and an automatic? I assumed, the auto would be faster, but was told they are heavier (all automatic cars) so may not be as fast. Anybody any comments on this? Thanks. :-k :? :-k

Autos in general tend to be slower then manuals, unless they have fancy twin clutch setups like the VW DSG auto box.

I can't find any stats, but generally autos are slower due to fewer gears and inefficient power transfer. A supercharged SC automatic recorded a 17sec 1/4 mile at the japshow finale last year, which is a bit slower than an n/a manual.

this is probably due to a better launch by a manual, and the abitily to change gear when you like (eg near redline) rather than a sensible auto

some auto sc's have a sports mode which is supposed to be better than std mode, but i have never driven a direct comparison

i would go for manual every time rather than autobox

yeah my old mk1 supercharger (auto) did a 16.4 1/4 mile in nz.. it was very very quick when going, but launching was terrible.
for example at the same drag strip, my friends completely ragged to hell (and beyond) mk1a n/a did a 15.4 1/4 mile..his was manual.
When rolling my car would leave his for dust, at the lights though..slow.
mine was great for daily driving to work though, in stop start traffic (45mins a day), thats where i liked the auto. it drank the fuel hard too, more so im sure than a manual one would

Read on the net the sc auto in 1989 was the fastest accelerating production car in the world... from 0-30

wondered if true

"'Road and tracks' review that showed that 0-30 even in an AUTO supercharged MR2 was as fast as very expensive exoctic cars (F40 no less), due to it's decent traction, tourqe and MR layout. Of course after 30 it doesn't compare to Ferraris it's just an example of that intial boost"

http://www.okmoc.com/info.html :-
A year later, in 1988, the car received a massive power boost when the Supercharged MR2 was released. The Supercharged MR2s are the fastest production cars in the world from 0-30 MPH, even beating the Ferrari F40 in bottom-end acceleration.

I doubt they were 'that' good - but funny reading reviews like that.

The launch of an auto sc on drag strip would be pants due to low revvs
you need higher revvs to stop getting 'bogged down' on the sticky tarmac.
TBH a good ragging of an NA will kepp up with a std sc for a bit.....

yeah was very low revs launching, bogged down like a beyotch. Made for consistent times though. There were a few different modes (like economy etc) which changed how the car took off, mine was faster off the line on economy than any other mode oddly enough.

Cant honestly believe 0-30 would be as fast as an F40, a bog standard rev1 mk2 turbo my mate owned would fly by me after -0-30 - (kilometres/h)...

the rev1 turbo wasnt around in 1988 though. anyhow an auto sports car just doesnt cut it imho, autos are fit for big leather clad arm chairs and thats it. i mean how are you ment to ballance the car mid corner on the throttle if do have auto?

This makes the Heckles stand up everytime it gets brought up.
The auto SC also has a manual button so you can choose when it changes gear, and red line it as much as you want.
My SC Auto is a lot faster than any of my n/a`s.
Once the weather picks up, it will get its nst 180mm
large pully fitted, so will be even quicker
