Post by Oldyellow »

Hi guys I'm new on here it looks like a great forum. Question today is there any difference between Mk1A and Mk1B tail lights i.e. are they interchangeable. Thanks

This is where the geeks come out.

There is a difference betwenn 1a and 1b lights if you are non uk.

The non uk 1b cars (or non rear fog cars) have the "supercharger" lights. Any that was destined for a land with fog light laws has kept the 1a lights (basically 99% of the uk).

They are interchangeable but the "supercharger" lights will need some fetleing.

OK proper anorak on now
while std UK spec rear lamp clusters are interchangeable between 1A & 1B
there is a slight difference in that as the 1B car has its air box in the boot the grey plastic cover that allows access to the bulbs is split on 1B lamps so that you can change bulbs on the passanger side without removing the boot inner trim piece over the air box
told you it was an anorak zone
welcome to the IMOC

It was some time ago, but I changed the supply to the rear lights on my first Mk1b -

The fog lights became the brake lights (the only difference being that they were separate from the normal rear lights, so more distinctive when illuminated) and the brake lights became the fogs.

Made sense to me anyway.

The reason I asked was because I want to have a go at changing the indicator lens to clear a la Jimi but don't want to f$%k up the original lights JUST IN CASE i make a hash of it, so going to buy a set from a scrappy to experiment with.

I have mine rewired so that the brake light is only a brake light 21w and the fog is "side and fog 3w+21w". I like the brake lights to come on separate from the sides. ..... didn't stop the car being rear-ended though.

I made the fogs into tail/brake/fog.
So I have 4 tail lights (5W) 4 brake lights(21W) when the fogs are off. 2 brake lights, 2 fogs(21W) and 4 tail lights when the fogs are are on
Oh and the LED spoiler brake light as well :D
Jimi

Edit
Here's how to do the 4 brake light mod CLICKY

Ohh and I forgot, one for the anoraks  early 1a's had round reflectors, later cars were rectangular although I don't know if that applied to UK cars

Shame you aren't near me, I have 3 spare sets of rear lights in my garage and would be happy to donate to a good cause. 8)
