Alarm not deactivating even after engine start !

Post by jm3171 »

Hi
I have a 1996 10th anniversary edition Mr2. On occassions recently the alarm key fob won't open/disarm/unlock the car. Unlocking the car with the key sets the alarm off as described in the manual! even with the car started it continues to alarm for a while! Then after a few minutes the keyfob unlock switches it off while the engine is still running.

1. Can the alarm just be disconnected while retain remote unlock ?
2. Which is most likely: Is it the keyfob (replaced battery & tried other one), alarm or central locking ?
3. Any ideas why it is intermittent. ?

Note: Car has high pitched noise, radio interference even with radio off/disconnected, noise not from speakers that I think is an alternator suppressor gone but could it be related to alarm problem

Second, there is a key socket under steering wheel that I was told by previous owner that it deactivates alarm (yet to try) and that the car had an aftermarket immobiliser removed....may be this is also contributing to the problem or maybe this key socket is left over from when the immobilser was removed as I've never seen it on other Mr2 ??

Sounds like this is going to be a right pain to sort out.....any ideas at all gratefully received !!

Oooooooh...sounds like a right mess here!

Personally, I'd get the MR2 down to your favourite car alarm emporium as soon as you can, as to me, it sounds like there's something fundamentally wrong that will leave you increasingly frustrated as well as having a car that has zero (or poor) security.

I would guess that the previous immobiliser system removal is causing this issue somehow, but it's hard to diagnose stuff like this over the intraweb!

Are the rest of the car's electrics okay? Lights, indicators, headlight motors, aerial, etc?
Mk2 NA Rev1 -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev2 -*- Mk1 NA -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev 3 = all gone!

Just need to find someone I can trust in the Stevenage/Cambridge area to have a look at it. All other electrics seem fine, apart form radio interference..but changing the head unit made little difference there.
