Mk1 sub options??
Hi there, this is for all you mk1 owners or people who know about how to fit subs in a mk1.
What have people done as i need bass but am struggling for ideas???

Re: Mk1 sub options??
hi
i used a jbl active bass cannon and removed the amp and the sub and installed into an carpeted mdf box behind the passenger seat.
if the box doesnt come out any further than the rear storage box you should have plent of passenger room.
honestly this amp and sub are really good in the mk1 and best of all the car is so sound proof you cant hear a thing outside which of course means no sound can escape!

Re: Mk1 sub options??
oh, nice car by the way
£1500 is a great price for a car in that condition.
i only wish mine was in as good condition

Re: Mk1 sub options??
Hi, there is no storage box behind the seats on my mk1, i struggled to fit a 6by9 behind the seat.
Ive ordered the new alpine swd-1600 and should be picking that up 2moro.

Re: Mk1 sub options??
I'm having similar problems, but I've got a T-bar and I can't really put anything behind the seats.
I've seen Kenwood do a sub system with two 6x9" subs and an amp that run off the normal speaker output from your stereo, I was thinking of trying to fit those somewhere.
Maybe under the seats.
I'm interested as to where you're putting the alpine sub and what it sounds like.

Anyone else had this problem with a t-bar and found a good way to get more bass?
I've got the best
(reasonably priced!) speakers that fitted in the front, JBL p452's, but the four inch limit doesnt give much for them to work with! My rear speakers are standard, and sound awful so I've had to fade thm out.
Anyone know what size they are and if there are any
(reasonably priced
) alternatives that fit straight in?

Re: Mk1 sub options??
Ive had problems getting hold of the alpine swd-1600, went to pick one up and they cant get any till next month.
Gonna see what i can find at the max power show.

Ive been told the alpine is the best in its class, better then the pioneer, kenwood and clarion.

Ive put infinity kappa series speakers in the front and back, 4" in the front and 3.5" in the back.
They have really good sound quality as they use crossovers, they cost me under
£90 but i need bass!!

Re: Mk1 sub options??
you could always put 12" subs in the frunk if you want some
'real' bass.

Re: Mk1 sub options??
I'm running Infinity Kappa's front and rear in my Mk1, along with a Clarion SRV303 active subwoofer.
I've got it mounted behind the passenger seat, though this probably wouldn't be ideal if you've got a T-bar.
I think the Clarion will fit beneath the seats, but I'm not sure.
.
.
I'll tell you next week when I try it
(I'm getting a T-bar Mk1).

The Clarion is pretty good, doesn't weigh much, and looks neat.

I'm perfectly happy with the sound when the car is not going too fast, but on motorways etc.
.
there's too much road noise to compete with.

Re: Mk1 sub options??
In my last mk1 I had a sub built into an mdf box behind the passenger seat, but that only works if its a coupe.
I believe there was a toyota under seat sub box many years ago? Doubt it'd sound very good by todays standards though!

I looked at these but read on an ICE forum that they didn't work very well in door builds etc.

Re: Mk1 sub options??
anyone used the clarion SRV303 and does it fit under the seats
?
The standard toyota one was very poor indeed and not worth the plastic it was made from really unless it was just mine wasnt working
!

Re: Mk1 sub options??
Hi Sam,
you can have a listen to my Clarion when you come round to pick up your stuff

Not sure if it'll fit UNDER the seat.
.
.
fits behind it nicely, but I've not got a T-bar.

Cheers,
Jon

Re: Mk1 sub options??
I managed to fit a 15 litre sealed sub box with a Sony 8" subwoofer in it behind the passenger seat of my t-bar Mk1.
I built the box just low enough that the t-bar glass rests on top of it with its underside facing the seat and doesn't protrude above the bottom of the rear window glass when stowed.
The restraining strap still reaches around the bottom edge of the roof panel to keep it secure.
The passenger seat had to come forward a few notches to accommodate the box but there's still enough legroom for under six-footers.
The sub powered by a Blaupunkt amp under the seat provides kick-ar$e bass, and some MB Quart 4" components in the dash handle mid and high frequencies for a well balanced sound.

Re: Mk1 sub options??
I have a t-bar and it came with a nice bass tube that perfectly fits on floor behind passenger seat.
The tube is not fixed to floor or anything, but the seat pushed back holds it in place.
this means when i stow the t bars the sub and seat move forward to accomodate, and everything still stays in place.
Also the sub tube is easy to totally remove if you really need loads of space if on a long camping trip eg.
le mans
This gives enough bass to dampen my exhaust noise, and gives a nice bass-pumping-butt-massage to the passenger! lol
It's a good budget option

Re: Mk1 sub options??
I have just bought a blaupunkt THb250
- this is a 10 inch sub, with
the speaker and port on the same side
- so the port goes into open air
under the passenger seat.

This
*just* fits behind passenger seat, and TBar glass goes on top.

The passenger seat is moved forwards a little
- I think I could jam it all
in a bit more tightly if I removed some carpet from the sub, or applied
a hammer to the metal bar in the back of the seat!

There is a cheap and cheerful
"Mutant" amp under the driver seat.

I put Pioneer TSH871 in rear and TSH107 in front
- when fitting the rears,
I snapped the metal fixings off the original speakers, and used these
as
"clamps" for the new speakers
- this has seemed to work really well!

It sounds pretty good now!
