[Mk2] [Turbo] Cat studs, help needed please!

Post by robbie_742003 »

Hi all, havin a bit of a mare changing my standard zorst to a Blueflame. I managed to get the most difficult siezed nut loose on the 3 stud flange.
Today i've come to get them all off again and a previously unsiezed nut will only come half way down the stud and is stuck fast. After a bit of forcing it seems the stud has turned round almost 360 degress (i know this cos i marked it), and the nut is still stuck.
My question is, surely if the stud was going to shear off it would have done turning round that much? Is the stud just turning in the cat? And would it be better to knock the stud through and just put a bolt in place?

thanks

Rob

the stud is threaded on both ends - if your nut is siezed and you can still turn it then it could well be unscrewing the thread from the cat flange - or it could be about to shear off :D

If nuts sieze halfway it can be because the threads have locked with the rust and crap on the stud thread - try tightening up and using a wire brush to clean of as best you can - then undo - you should get a couple of more turns at least - repeat until something shears or patience runs out...

Dont think its gonna shear off. Wouldnt it have done so if its turned 360 degrees?
Whats wierd is thats its a nut i had off completely last week and only put back on when i couldnt get another one undone! As they're locking nuts(they have 2 slits in them) it looks like one side of the nut has really gripped onto the thread. So a blowtorch or cutting off seems the only answer now.

looks like i havent explained myself properly.

the stud is threaded at both ends. the flange on the cat side is threaded.
therefore if your nut is siezed and the whole stud/nut is still turning then youre unscrewing the stud from the cat flange - keep turning and it will come out - you can then either try to release the nut at your leisure or use a bolt.

No, it was understood. Was just sayin that it would have sheared already if its turned that far round so it must be unscrewing from the cat flange, otherwise it would be a cut off job.
Am just getting very frustrated at what should be a simple job when i keep hitting stupid snags!
