[Mk2] [Generic] Rusting MK2 Sills, common problem.....?

Post by milesy_boy »

Hi all, with all mk2's approaching a fair old age now, and with the British climate being what it is, It seems that a common problem is rusting sills?? There were 2 at my mechanics garage getting fixed,a 95 and a 93, and I had a close look at the sills. From the wheel arch onwards and they were starting to bubble, I had to get one sill welded for the MOT and the repair was a bit rough, now.... surely with all the talented people that are on this site, someone/people could make a complete full length sill that could be welded on. I know that cutting out the old sill and welding the new one in is not for the beginner, but I still think that a solution could be found and produced?? Ideas and opinions appreciated here as a bulk buy could be the way forward.
I think this is going to be a big problem for lots of people soon????

Regards

Miles

I had both outer and inner sills changed mate got from MR T cant remeber the price but weren't too bad also had the wheel arche tunnel cut out and a new one put in and painted back to normal with 4 coats of under seal all in £2400 which in my veiw was money well spent to get it back to original !!!!

This was no cut out and weld abit of metal in i had all underseal removed from under the car to check if any where else was rusting up!!!!!
I got a verbal garantee that it would not rust up again!!!!

Naturally with age this happens, depends of a fair few factors. Has car been regularly cleaned, polished, garaged, repainted (well not regularly!).
Also some kits like the border can cause water to sit on the top of the skirts which can cause rust.

Everyone has a different story. But if it happens its easy to fix.

it does seem to be a common problem. Depending on the state its in you can either get new sills or just rub them down a little, treat them and paint them again.

There are cheaper alternative sills that you can buy, dont know the models but some people have got them off nissans and fords.

The bottom of the doors is common as well, i just try and put some waxoyl on as soon as poss.

It's a common problem -there's been a few posts on it. I had 2 sets of full -length sill panels made to re-do mine (actually 2 separate steel pieces seam welded together in the middle on each side). If you botch it or do it on the cheap, you'll only end up doing it again, and again, and again.

mrT when i got mine were about £50 for half a sill. From what i gather you can get the whole sill for less than that from other companies.

Opel Manta sills apparently are a perfect match.

As far as I have seen it always seem to be Nautical Blue H-plates that have bad sills. Or maybe it just shows up worse on them.
