at least you didn't get badly hurt and by breaking the car you could quite easily get 2-3 grand back on her....the apexi ecu should net you £400-£500 on it's own...

ive been offered £1300 for the whole car and if im honest i just want rid, i havnt got the time to break the car so if someone can collect ill take £1300 for the whole car

to be fair mate, sell the car minus the ecu and comander...it will take you 10 mins to get it out and will be another £450+ in your pocket...also boost controller and arc induction and thats another £200+....then sell the car for a min of £1300 which is still a good price to someone wanting the engine etc....


at least it will cut your loses a little

I've been thinking about this, a lot of MR2s seem to fall foul to the perils of black ice diesel leaves on track horror - what if tyre companies are actually putting diesel into tyres using hollow treads to save money? I mean it makes total sense and would explain why these carefully driven machines keep having problems on the apex of fast corners on cold nights when the roads might be damp after gritting due to it also being cold and icy.

As the tyres wear they leak the diesel out onto the treads and then "whoosh" into a tree so that the owner needs a new car and new tyres. Goodyear etc get more money, the insurance companies are probably involved and I bet recovery companies have a hand in it too - you never see them crashing!

I guess the fact that the police were so close meant that the diesel formulation was still around for them to see, I bet it's normally formulated to evaporate once it's done it's thing to remove any evidence of this plot.

Bad luck though, I'm going to take my tyres off and see if that helps.

The roads round here have been much less grippy over the past few days, possibly something to do with the fog & sudden drops in temperature?
I did a fair few miles in the crx last night to take a look at some delica star wagons, the amount of understeer I was getting was scary.

Maybe it's the new molasses grit they are using that's causing these grip issues?

I went out in the car the other night and found it very difficult to stop the rear wheels spinning all the time, then I realised I was being a bit of a fool and drove to the conditions presented.

Luckily I didn't come across any diesel ice though.

Personally, I don't think that it looks repairable - that front end has received a heavily blow and I'd be surprised if the chassis isn't bent.

I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but it goes to show why Fully Comp insurance is a must when owning relatively expensive and powerful cars.

You got up and walked away though so the car did what it was supposed to It can be replaced (eventually) - you can't!

If you get a pay-out from the insurance, you'll lose the right to split the car for parts, unless you can buy it back again, right?

I know it's low on the OPs priorities right now but he probably needs to find out how much he can buy the car back for if he DOES get it written off OR he needs to do the sums and get his spanners out.

Glad you're okay. Although I'm used to RWD cars, I drive my 2 like an old woman in the cold or wet. I've only had one really HUGE slide in it and, even though I probably handled it OK, it took 2 lanes of a 3 lane roundabout to get back and, even then, it slid half way around the roundabout!
By contrast, my BMW 530 used to slide on wet roundabouts all the time but I never once felt scared of it.
The MR2 really is difficult to get back once it starts to slide.

Very sorry to read this, really feel for you and know partly how you feel as i binned my Supra after only 8 days although i did have fully comp insurance (first time i ever went fully comp).

Before you doing anything else have you considered buying a cheap rev1 or 2 Na and taking evrything else off yours to build another turbo (could prob get the car for less than £500 if you buy one with a dead engine and someone like 3s would prob swap it all over for a fair price if you didnt want to).

or get a MK1 mr2 and make a 1.5 that would be a good option too

Whilst the existence of diesel may remain in question in certian circles, I don't think anyone is going to question that these cars can bite.

the uk n/a conversion could be good - old(er) models are getting cheap(er) now, but don't forget running gear like bearings, brakes and shocks will reflect mileage.

take out the apexi ECU and commander

take out the arc induction kit and the boost controller

take off the exhaust and any other shiny bits.

put all parts up for sale in FOR SALE seprate.

sell the engine along with the shell etc for £1300 then sell the rest seprate u will see back about 3k in total

Conditions here have been really changeable, i took my mk1.5 out the other night and the roads were dry and grippy, the sun was shining. 5 miles later out in the country and the roads were still dry but damp and slippy in bits that were in the shade. In the dark i wouldnt have seen them and the might well have caught me out.

Have to agree though, its madness to have only 3rd party cover. My 1.5 is fully comp with an agreed value, you just never know whats round the corner!

please dont give me stick for letting it go so cheaply, they came with a recovery wagon and took it.

i needed the car gone as the chap who recovered it for me last night didnt charge me anything but couldnt leave the car on his wagon any longer.

im not happy ive lost £4k on the car and not to mention the stress its caused my family and me over the last day.

if anyones going to loose sleep its going to be me
