[Mk2] [NA] rocker cover gasket

Post by fearless »

hi guys how hard is it to do a rocker cover gasket, im fairly good with a spanner just looks like you have to take a fair amount of stuff off to get at it. and how long we talking, cost of gasket, and any nasty problems that occur when doing it many thanks steve :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

before you go off replacing a gasket.....

I'm assuming you have a leak to be thinking of a new gasket?

dont know if this applies to the N/A but my old rev2 tubby used to leak small amounts of oil into the spark plug wells from this gasket.
The problem is that the bolts holding the cover down have a phillips head, making it difficult to get them tight enough to prevent the leak.

Have a look at the bolt tightness before spending any cash.

easy mate, throttle body, four bolts and pull to on side, then take off the inlet manifold, then unbolt the wiring loom from the rocker cover, then your there. bout 30 minutes

hmm like zippy said will look at how tight bolts are how do you do them up as some are not easy to get a screwdiver to is there a special tool :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

never really solved it - tried tightening as hard as i could - even tried putting a phillips bit in a socket - never worked, they seemed tight enough but always undid themselves. my latest tubby (rev3+) has hex head bolts. I think this is probably just a design fault on the earlier cars.
The leak was never bad enough for me to actually do anything other than tighten the boltes whenever i rememebered.
If you need to sort it i would suggest trying to source some proper hex head bolts and see if you still have a leak.

I broke my rocker cover replacing the gasket :) Make sure you don't overtighten the bolts! Mine is a rev3 turbo so they were hex bolts. Toyota also added washers to the rev3 which are metal on one side and rubber on the other, to try and combat the loosening bolts - perhaps you could try using them?

As above, have heard of people breaking the cam cover when overtightening the bolts, you can get Allen headed bolts so then it is even easier to overtighten them, the actual amount of torque required is very low. I believe silicon sealer is used in conjunction with the gasket to achieve a good seal and prevent oil leakage.

....unless you get a bit too drunk and forget where you put the nuts and bolts #-o

If it's easy on a turbo then it must be easy on an NA. Just get in there my son! :thumleft: (but i'll look into gettin myself some hex studs tho...good tip!)
Chaos, panic and disorder. My work here is done!

depends wat rev it is coz 3 onwards the engine is orentated the other way round meanin the inlet does not have to cross the rocker cover. but i should not have took the throttle body off just unbolted it from the maifold. i already have hexheads with the polymer/metal washers. gud fun tho lol
