[Mk2] [NA] Front Tyre Wear

Post by chiefymcchief »

Hi All,

Had MOT done a week ago and was told that front tyres would need changing soon due to wear. When looked the inside 2 or 3 inches has worn completely but outside has 3mm of tread left. This is the same for both front tyres.

I am assuming this isnt right and i should get even tyre wear?

Have been told my tracking is probably out and that just front tracking will solve this, is this correct?

If not I assume a 4 wheel alignment is what i need, does anyone have any suggestions of places to go in the Northwest?

Through my searching noticed Sbits gets a few mentions but i could not get through on the number i found on this website.

Cheers

yep i would say your wheels are towing out thats why thay are wearing uneven, also your car isnt seriously lowered is it only if wheel camber is bad that would wear out the inside of tyres aswell. having tracking done will cure this or if your car is lowered take it up so its not as low :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

As far as i am aware it is standard suspension set up. I dont think it looks as though it has been lowered.

apologies for ignorance but would tracking the fronts sort out the towing out?

you can pay £30 for tracking but it would be better to identify the problem first....could be a worn steering joint or worn suspension etc...are you experiencing any vibrations or pulling while driving...?

I see in your garage your wearing aftermarket wheels so first things first check and make sure you've got spiggot rings on (to fill the gap between hub and the centre of the wheels) and they're the correct size. That could explain the vibration. Then get a good mechanic who knows 2s to check for suspension wear and that the brakes are OK and not binding. If thats OK I'd then get the tracking done. 4 wheel alignment is best and better yet is somewhere that can do the rears independent to the fronts though just the front tracking may sort the tyre wear if thats where the problem lies. I'd get all 4 done independently of each other as these cars are v sensitive to geometry changes, certainly made a huge difference to mine after it was set up correctly.
Hope you get it sorted mate.

Im also getting this on mine. Can lowering cause it? Is it possible to stop it while keeping the car low?

cheers for the replies

Yes there are spigot rings in the alloys. Can only assume they are the corrrect size. did tell the company when bought the wheels what car they were going on. how can i tell if correct size?

Suspension should be fine. Had shocks on the front replaced as old ones were leaking. Also had droplinks done recently because they were worn. Would changing these parts put alignment out?

Calipers are fine. Put 4 new calipers on last year due to sticking of old calipers. did check the other day after drive to ensure alloys not hot and was fine.

Struggling to find a place that knows 2's to do an alignment in northwest. any suggestions? they are some toyota garages close by but not sure whether to take the car to them
