MK1 Import Fog Light Wiring

Post by richinlondon »

Does anyone know if there is a write up about wiring a fog light into the light cluster?

Does the wiring come through to the dash or does all this need to be wired through?

I assume you're talking about the JDM light cluster? If the car is an import there won't be any wiring already in place unfortunately. :(

The standard approach is to use one of the reversing lights as your fog light. You can get red bulbs to fit off eBay (I think they were a couple of quid for two). I made the driver's side reversing light the fog light (something makes me think the light has to be central or right of the car centre line).

I wired mine up by running a wire from the light round the top of the trunk (following the existing rear light wiring), through the big rubbet grommet into the engine bay, across the engine bay (looped a couple of times round one of the battery retainers to keep it clear of the engine) to the place where the gearshift cables go through the bulkhead into the cabin. The wire then goes under the centre armrest and up to the dash area. I got a UK foglight switch (the round button one with the telltale illumination that matches the demister switch) and fitted that to the dash under the headlight/wiper switch (can't remember which way round they are!). It looks standard if you do this but some people just put a toggle switch next to the coin holder instead (although for the MOT you need a telltale light somewhere to inform you the foglight is on).

I wired the foglight switch using the power feed to the defogger switch. The defogger switch is separately fused (DEFOG) and I figured that I was actually unlikely to ever have the fog light AND the defogger on at the same time (no point in defogging the rear window if there's nothing to see!) so the existing fuse rating should be fine. It avoids having the fog light adding to the load on the existing light circuits.

This setup passed the MOT last year, no problems btw.

Hope this helps.
