(especially the going rate or above) they are basically saying they are fully qualified to provide the service, basically in law if you pay someone a pittance to carry out a job they have limited liability, if you pay full whack you have the right to a proper service and if they don't provide it to satisfaction you have rights.

Trading standards would be worth talking to as well, any time i've had to kick up a fuss was with electronic stuff, which all falls under the sales of goods act, with work to a car it probably wouldn't be as straight forward.

COntact the garage first and let them know of your complaint, remain calm, remember that your problem lies with the garage not the individual, do this verbally and ask to speak to the manager, if they won

't try and reach an agreement ask for his details and inform him that you intend to take the matter further, most people don't like customers taking their details down and the fact that you will be naming them personally on a complaint that could end up in the small claims court will quite often make them change their minds
