[Mk2] [Turbo] how much power can you run on standard rev 2 turbo internals
As the title suggests i'm trying to find out how much power you can run on standard pistons and rods in a rev 2 turbo.
I know the rods should be good for upto 500 hp but pistons seem to be a bit of a grey area! Anybody got any idea's what they can take hp wise and what kind of boost you can run on them?

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] how much power can you run on standard rev 2 turbo internals
with the right cooling and mods 400 bhp is around a semi/max safe-ish limit.

.be prepared to spend a bit though to get it to last

right chargecooler,ecu,injectors,turbo etc.

chargecooler
Is a charge cooler a definate for that kind of power i've got a xs power intercooler in there just now with a gt 30 turbo 800cc injectors and a link ecu.
i'm hoping to get it mapped up to near 400!?

a charge cooler would be adventitious if your going for that kind of power on standard internals

every degree lost on the intake could not just add a bit more boost but could also be the difference between the engine surviving and not

your inter cooler might just get away with it on forged pistons but on standard internals then i wouldn't

there's a radtec for sale on the affiliates section for

cheers min,i know what i'll be doing this weekend now!

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] how much power can you run on standard rev 2 turbo internals
I had a Berk intercooler which is similar to the XS Power jobbie
(although far superior in some eyes
- no offence) and is rated to around 350bhp.
As my target power is around 450bhp this would be no good so I'm going for a large boot-mount.

I'm sure I read that Xxxx managed about 600bhp on stock internals before it gave up the goose, although this would be highly unrecommended!

For 350bhp+ you'll need to go CC or BMIC.
I guess you should also be thinking about forged pistons too if you want to be on the safe side.

I'm only going boot-mount as I'm doing something a little special.

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] how much power can you run on standard rev 2 turbo internals
hope youve changed that headgasket!

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] how much power can you run on standard rev 2 turbo internals
Not alot of power I'd say.
Stripped a few engines with ringland failure running bu88er all boost.
1.2bar
(ish) seems to kill them quite quickly.
Put forgies in if you want anything safe.

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] how much power can you run on standard rev 2 turbo internals
i hope they are ok to run around 320ish as thats what im aiming for

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] how much power can you run on standard rev 2 turbo internals
You could keep ur I/C and add watre injection to it1!!!
Might work well enough

Interesting, would you say that goes for rev 3+ too?

is that with the standard turbo and cooling though because 1.2 bar could mean 300 or 400 bhp depending on the turbo, fueling, ecu, and chargecooling

bigger turbo's can run so much more air at similar psi settings and run at lower temps etc.

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] how much power can you run on standard rev 2 turbo internals
This has been stock set up.
It is not det that causes the ringlands to fail, the pistons are just not strong enough and the ringlands callapse under boost pressure.
One of the cars I stripped did have an uprated IC, but as I say, not a det issue.
Just weak pissies.

Good one? Rev 3 must have better pistons.

Good one? Rev 3 must have better pistons.I run mine at 1.3BAR
(CT20) for 2 years without any probs at all.
When I stripped it to build this set up, it was like new inside

No signs of wear or issues at all.
The only ones that I have seen with ringland failures have been Rev 1 and 2's.
I'm sure someone with more knowledge than myself could clarify this? Wheres JJ when you need him

Good article,Chris.
