its time to renew the rear pads on my mk1a and i was wondering which are the best. i have mintex at the moment(cant remember the number) which are fine but not what you`d call stunning.they are better than standard but i want the best. i will add that it is not a track car so they must perform in all conditions. so who`s got what, and how do they stop?
My Mk1 NA has grooved front disks and stock rear disks with DoT 5.1 brake fluid and braided flexi brake lines. It had a set of Chris W's fast road pads all round when I first bought the car. A rear caliper recon kit later and the brakes could stop a tank. The car is a Mk1 a/b - early engine & gearbox, late suspension & the later bigger brakes.
The front pads wore low at Anglesey earlier in the year (full weekend of track time) and I had to find anythig to fill the gap - went for Ferrodo pads which seemed ok. The rears also needed replacing (rear brake calipers got refurb with a refurb kit from Ms T) and because I was buying a recon kit (and hence at Ms T) - I put in Ms T pads.
With this slightly odd mix the brakes were still progressive, full of feel and powerful from cold. On the track they were ok but I did have to back off a couple of times at Brunty because they were running out of stoppage if I used them too much.
With Chris W's fast road pads - they were just as good when cold but didn't go off when they were hot. On the strength of that I ordered a set of Chris' fast road pads, disks and Motul brake fluid for the SC but it already has plenty of Pagid pad in so I'll keep them until they're needed.
I don't like mixing pads between front and rear - but the Ferrodo/Ms T mix seemed to be ok - I would like more rear bias on the brakes of my Mk1....
Cheers,
Si.
I've got Pagids all round on my MK1 and as long as you don't mind the dust they're very good. Held up well at Brunty with no loss of performance.
Chris
Chris Wilson i believe? He is very well respected on the MkivSupra.net site.
I brought some of his race spec pads for my old supra and they were pricey but offered expectional bite (quite dusty though-road spec are better in this respect)..... ......i was wondering if he did stuff for other toyota's/jap cars, this is good news!
Would 100% recommend his pads on the back of the transformation to the brakes on my old supra......
....ooer - sorry, yes Chris Wilson is the Chap! He's got a few facets to him and crops up on several Forums, not only Ms T related. He's well respected by people on all the Forums where I've bumped in to him.
He knows his onions (don't think he sells those though...but there again, you never know).
Cheers,
Si.
