[Mk2] [Turbo] Just got my first MR2 :D

Post by Steve-O 2007 »

Just picked up my first ever MR2. Its a 1994 L Reg Rev2 Turbo (might have been a NA when it came over and then converted to a Rev2 Turbo or it might be a very late edition Rev2 if thats possible) You might have saw it on Pistonheads. Heres some pics -

HKS Electronic Valve Controller 3
Cobra CAT1 Alarm and Immobiliser

Has 68,000 kilometres (approx 42000 miles) on the clock.

Noticed a few problems on the way home -

1. a picture of an engine lit up on the bottom left of the dash and then went off again after some time. While it was on there was no performance loss or anything noticable. What could this be?

Problem Sorted

2. When turning the lights on or flashing the lights it adds 1 or 2 km to the clock and the MPH needle jumps a bit. but it only does this once untill the car is turned off and turned back on again when it will do it again.

Problem Sorted

3. The water temp guage on the dash seemed to go right to the top then drop and go to the top and drop again, is this normal?? Theres an external temp guage anyway.

Problem Sorted

It feels like a Go-Kart when in it (guessing because of the coil over suspension) and the sound the turbo makes is amazing :D

What does the first click of the light stalk do? I turned it to the first click and no lights came on, turned it to the second click and the side lights came on (while adding 1km to my clock  ) turned it to 3rd click and the main lights came on, what does the first click do??

Now I just need another Bride seat for the passenger side and a owners manual :)

Overall Im very happy with it and it looks Very nice, Persoanlly I have never saw one like this around my area :)

Hard part now is waiting till Feb 26th before I can drive it (do to insurance, no point in canceling it and losing my no claim when the insurance is up soon anyway)!!!!

First click is "maintenance" - it means if you need to change a headlight bulb you can leave the lights popped up without any of the electrical circuits on.

another quick question, from the size of the gear stick, does it look like its had a short shift fitted or how can I check to see if its had one fitted??

also since the car will be sitting for a month is it best to run it for 10 mins and move it back and forward once every few days?

Looks to me like you have a volt metre so it was an NA and is that a Rev3 passenger seat I see plus the Rev3 lights.

No side repeaters?

lol, I know. just been cycling through the displays on the Apexi thing and its cool  . I like that graph it draws up and the digital rev guage it displays

Dont want to touch any of the settings as its been setup by Rogue. Just looked at the receipts and its had £2000 spent on it at Rogue alone in the last few months so Im guessing the will be fine if its been to there :).

Oh yea, checked over it and theres no rust at all on it

The wheel / tyre clearance on the inside of the front arches when turning is about 1cm so its close

Is the dump valve thats fitted safe to use on a Rev2??

Fuel usage seemed good as well. Car had 1/4 tank of Shell V-Power in so we put another £30 of V-Power in taking it to 3/4 tank and set off home. Got home after 110 miles and it has 1/2 tank left so seems quite good :)

Yea, Thats what got me thinking it was originally a NA (the volt meter) but then thought that someone could have replaced the boost guage with the NA volt meter? If done by a MR2 specialist, is there any down sides of having an NA converted to Turbo?

It has front indicators and rear indicators, no side indicators.

More pics :) -

Think I will change the dash back to the standard black

Also, just wondering is the circled part of the front light suposed to light up?? I cant seem to get it to light up :( -

Oh yea, the rear bumper near the exhaust looks like its got burn marks from where its been popping flames

The part circled is just a reflector.
First position on lights also useful in very cold icy weather when you can leave the pop ups up and not have to defrost them to get them up in the morning.
Nice looking car.
Engine warning light and temperature guage would be the first things I looked into.

Pretty sure you need side ones by law, wont pass an MOT without them.

smells of rev 3 n/a with rev 2 turbo conversion to me.

anyway, everyone seems to be avoiding the questions on the 3 faults, sounds like things you want to be sorting fairly quickly if i were you, especially if its potentially overheating. no, its NOT normal for the temp gauge to do that!
could also be well worth checking its history with rogue and seeing what they know.

yup, I have 1 month to get it all sorted before I start using it so should be fine :). I will contact Rogue again as since Im now the owner of the car they might be able to let me know abit more on it :)

The external Water Temp Guage was reading about 90 - 95.. does that sound right?

are you sure, Ive seen quite a few MR2's now with only front and rear indicators and Im sure i have seen standard cars with only front and rear indicators.

90-95 water temp seems high to me. My normal water temp on PFC Commander is 84 under normal conditions.

My dad noticed that the carpet under the drivers mat was very slightly damp but we didnt know if this was maybe some water that got into the car as it was getting washed when we arrived. Does the radiator pipe run along this area and could it have a slight leak maybe if it does?... Saying that, it didnt smell of antifreeze or anything.

Will check water levels etc tomorrow.

Checked the carpet this mornign and it was dry so thinking the door might have been open a bit when washing it as we had heavy rain all night and no water got in.

Did the fault code check and got -

34 - Excessive Turbo Charging Pressure

42 - No Speed signal for 8 seconds when engine speed is between 2,500rpm and 5,000 rpm and coolant temp is below 80 Deg C except when racing the engine

Could error 34 be an old error code that hasnt been cleared from the memory as Rogue Motor Sport changed the turbo and set the Electronic HKS Boost controller to a safe boost level etc 3 months ago for the previous owner who has left it how they set it??

Didnt notice any boost problems on the way home but they did say something about recently fitting new intercooler rubber hoses (the blue ones) as they were too big and leaking so maybe its an old code?

I think I noticed error 42 on the way home (guessing this was what the engine light came on for) as the MPH guage seemed to jump from 55mph to 65mph then down to 60mph..

Thanks

180-210F, 82-98C is desired water temp....
mine sits at 89-90 and dips when on boost to 85-87......

you temp guage shouldnt be moving really at your temps......you sure that guage is correct...
mine didnt start to move unitl my guage was over 100C and only went to 3/4 at 110C....

it should be ROCK solid at just less than half way.

Im thinking the Stock guage might not be working properly. Im guessing its easy to replace the stock guages sensor?

Also, something seems wrong with the electrics somewhere. put it in first and rolled forward slowly and the MPH dial jumped to 120mph and sat there and droppepd back down and added a few miles to the dial..

Only thing that I dont like is the noise the twin plate clutch makes (but its not realy a big problem). When you put the clutch in to change gear you can here the clutch plates like lightly rubbing each other making a rough sort of noise, but maybe it just needs worn in as its not been on for long. Anyone else get this problem with a twin plated clutch?

Nice car mate, couple of things I'm not keen on though:

-Spoiler is waaaaaaay too big, ruins the back end.

-All them guages and displays looks to cluttered.

All my opinion though, enjoy it.

Thanks. When you see it in person I think the spoiler looks great but I supose every one has there own style that they like.

Thinking of maybe moving the Apexi thing to the ashtray area since thats only been stuck on. Cant realy move anything else from that area as the dash has been cut away plus I dont smoke so dont need the ashtray :thumleft:
