Don't agree - it's a mass market, Japanese car that was sold in "expected" numbers in the UK reflecting the sort of demand there was for the car, for a long period of time.

Would you consider the MX5 a specialist market car, or the MGF?

Give it another 10 years, and a mint Rev. 1 might be worth something - at the moment, it's an old car teetering on the brink of banger or classic status and still very common on the roads. I think Seras are more specialist than this, and they've dropped a LOT of value as they get older.

Even the Figaro has been losing money as the UK market reaches saturation point - perhaps a few people wanted that car SO badly they paid too much, and importers saw this and got greedy, but I wouldn't be surprised if the number of Figaros in active use in the UK exceeded that in Japan - and of course the sort of people that wanted it because it was so unique have now seen another handful on the road, and want the next thing to stand out in (I think the Toyota Will Vi is heading that way).

Used prices rarely reflect the differences in sale price of the new car variants - how much was the T-bar over the hardtop in 1991?

The difference between a t-bar and hardtop from new was roughly 1k. One of those WhatCar books will give you the definative answer.

£1,500 on the Mk 1 MR2 - taking it from £13K roughly to £14,500.

Parkers is the easiest quick reference for prices - says just under £16K (presumably for the 3S-FE) up to £24K - I'd be guessing hardtop to moonroof would be £1000, then moonroof to t-bar another £1500, and I don't know if leather was standard or optional - but I'd expect it to add another grand or so if it were an option.

However, since the original point was missed entirely - that the basic price of the car hardly increased at all despite massive increases in earning, housing costs and costs of living - for the sake of "being right", I think I'll just leave that bit alone. If you've got some old What Car reprints feel free to clarify the pricing.

I was not speaking about NA Mk2s - Im talking about turbos being specialist as they were never sold in the UK or European Domestic market they are a specialist car (and giant killers out the box and BHP per £/yen even when new) and should command a far higher price than a NA

I would still pay far more for a OLD Jap sports car than a 6 year old BMW/Ford/Audi any day of the week (hell Im even looking a spunking 8 to 9K on a AE86 Corrola as thats what its worth to me and is a passion rather than just a car.

But the original thread was about someone trying to justify why they were asking £6,000 for a Rev.4 UK NA car with nearly 100K on the clock. In fact, most of the content regarding turbos has been making the point that his original suggestion that his car was "worth more than an import" was wrong, because imports offer things like Turbos which weren't available here.

The AE86 is a classic. I see 20 MR2s on the road for every AE86 I see, and it was never that popular in the UK - ISTR seeing far more of those horrid Nissan Sylvia things.

True, however in my mind set , when I was looking for my car 4 years ago a 1996/1997 MR2 was up around 7 to 8 K for a NA - I suppose its what some one is willing to pay.

If the car had a refreshed engine aswell as all the other bits he says hes replaced 6K is worth it IMO - if you going to keep the car for some time you would shell out a fair few grand replacing the bits hes done that now wont need doing for ages , where as if you spend 4500K on a same age car it could be in need of TLC and you can spunk more to fix it (which people regularly do)

The choice for me would be - 6K on a BMW or a Tidy MR2 - Id take the 2 as its a rarer car and not a saloon car. If how ever I needed 4 seats and bigger boot and a bit of grunt a BMW/Audi/Ford/VW would fit the bill but never make me go, "thats a tasty car , I want to take it round the twistys"

£6K for me is just the wrong amount to spend on a used car except for real classics. It's enough money that you'd notice the depreciation, and not enough to get something quite right.

I just wouldn't trust someone else's used car/workmanship if they're telling me it's "been rebuilt". I've had enough rebuilt engines to know that this can mean anything from a proper rebuild to dropping the sump and sliding in some new crank bearings to kill the rattle for a few thousand miles. Much rather pay £3,000 less on an "average" car, and use the other £3,000 to do it up to my standards.

I think that's really what people are getting at re: mods, turbo or not - if you've shelled out £10K on uprating or modifying your car, you're paying as much for the work being done to your own personal standards and taste as much as an improvement in the car - the actual increase in value will never match what you've spent (again, I would choose stock over modded all day long with the exception of Woodsports' V6 transplants, which are well documented). Even then, if someone wanted to sell me a V6, I'd want it for less than it would cost me to buy my own car and have it converted, because in mine, I'd get to meet Paul, see what was done, know how it was treated afterwards, have a direct line of communication as the customer should there be any issues relating to it.

I don't want the cars to be worth less. I think used cars are all far too cheap, and as such people don't maintain them, and it's a terrible hit for the environment - new cars replacing old ones that were perfectly good. Never mind fuel economy, overall lifespan economy of the car and car use is the real killer.

If you get the same sort of use out of a 10 year old Honda as you would a brand new Honda, why is the 10 year old car worth less than a tenth of the new car? It's not 90% worn out - but merely replacing consumable items will write off the car financially so people buy new.

Anyway, different rant. I think the initial car isn't all that, tbh - if it were stunningly low mileage and all original I'd be more sympathetic - but I've seen dealers selling 10th anniversary cars with 60K miles and of course, a dealer warranty for less money. It's a no brainer to choose between them.

Yeah £6k is asking too much really. It's frustrating but unfortunately it's reality. Your car wouldn't sell for that price unless you get someone who just falls in love with it and has to have it. I tried to convince myself that my rev 2 G-Limited was worth £2500 last year, the bodywork was really tidy but it didn't make any difference. There were too many cheaper cars out there. I think with turbo's it's a different matter, they're more rare and fine examples of these are harder to find so they will hold their value more.

If I had a mint turbo I'd be very reluctant to sell, seems better to keep it stored in a garage for the summer and weekends then buy something cheaper to run for everyday use. I'm not convinced the values will go up much in the future. A fair few turbo's have been written off now but they're still being imported over.

Just to reinforce the point - the classifieds right now have a 64K miles Rev. 5 on a 2000 W registration that looks seriously tidy, for £5,800, and a Mk 2 V6 for £2,500...

Really. Given the choice? What would you choose :)

The UK never got a tin top. I'm not sure what your point is really. No one is disputing what the SW20 is: an old jap sports car perilessly close to banger status. But if you think the list price of a 2.0. 3SGE engined car hardly changed in price between '90 & 2000, you're very much mistaken.[/i]

I really think that owners buy the car at whatever price it is and then simply think that it doesn't really depreciate and then get upset when someone tells them that their car is only worth a fraction of what they thought it was.

6K? You must be on drugs. That is bonkers. You are vastly over-estimating its value.

All cars unless they are classics (the mk2 is not) lose money.

For example in Feb 2005 we bought a '94 325i coupe for £3550. It had low mileage and a perfect spec. We paid over the odds slightly for it.

Come Dec 2007 I sold it in 2 days for £1850. Okay i sold it a bit cheap but i wanted it shifted. Thats life, when you keep a car and put nearly 30K mileage on it, it loses value. Thats it.

The only car i didn't lose any money on was my old MK1a NA which i restored. I bought it for £350 and sold it for £1600 having spent £1200 on it.

At the end of the day the old adage rings true. A car is only worth what someone will pay for it.

As for controlling the market, are you raving mad? Why don't you just accept the fact that the bottom has well and truly dropped out of MK2 MR2s?

I saw this years ago with the MK1s getting to a point where they are practically given away. Its the same old story, the car's value drops and the only cars that are worth looking at must have had work done on them or be stupidly low mileage or stored. As the cars are not worth anything, they get scrapped and the numbers of that car overall reduce. Once they reduce to a point where demand is perceived to increase, then the price starts to increase for the dwindling number of good cars left.

Bear in mind that there are way more more MK2s than there ever was MK1s and you can see that this process will likely take even longer.

now... if its not sold in the next few months, i would be putting a re-built v6 in her and a turbo conversion.. but would then be asking 8-9k when i go to sell it...

i know its throwing money away, but its my hobby and i look at the mr2 as a classic..

lol... well maybee not controlling the market... i just think its a waste of a good car and i was trying to really justify my price on a mk2 t-bar which i have 60% restored, and a the same time, have a little bit of a rant about the used car market

Dont wont to sound funny but I would love too see a picture of your 6k mr2 N/A ?

I searched for ages for mine and when she come along it was an import had seen loads and had also been looking at RX7s (15mpg) my car had only done 42km thats about 2000 miles a year OK i might have been lucky and it was a weekend car for the 1 owner since new. I paid 4k and part exchanged my uk Mk1 that was doing its best to to rott out in the usual places they were made from British steel the MK1s unlike the MK2s

The difference with the imports is as mentioned earlier they are not weather beaten and rotting with all the crap we put on our roads because we have too in our climate the japs seem to really love there sports cars and probably dont have as many selfish idiots that dont care if they smack there doors onto your car when they park or do run overs in a street of parked cars when they have had a good drink

Ive also always been taught that if a car has had a re spray it dosent reflect well as it had to be re sprayed. You dont need to go and burnout peoples cars to put your value up if you can wait, only the good ones will be left just like what happened with the MK1s.

Keep your car mate its obviously worth 6k to you !! :D V6 Hmmmm now thats a purrrrfect sound !!!

If you are on drugs they seem good ! :eye: :D

Its not a waste of a good car, put simply they are just not worth that much. We all have to accept that the money we spend on our cars will not be recouped.

So now you've spent £3.5k on a paint job it looks like it should do?

Nett increase in value: £0.00

Sorry. That's the way the mop flops. :(

And the worst thing is some potential buyers will be wary thats now had a re-spray, thinking it's to hide accident damage rather than to make it look like new ](*,)
