[Mk2] [Turbo] DIY Fuel Cut Defender

I'm thinking of making one myself.
I presume it's pretty much just a variable resistor and a standard resistor thats needed but i don't know what resistances I should get.
Has anyone made one before or got one lying around that they can test?

Am I right in saying that as std, there is a single output wire going to the ECU? Then to fit an FCD you cut the wire, add a variable resistor into it, then splice a new wire into the ECU side of the variable resistor and connect that to ground via a fixed resistor?

better to use a zenner diode... and a resistor, that way your boost gauge will move exactl the same until you hit the 'overload' voltage of the zenner diode.

the advantage of this, is you get the gauge working exactly the same upto the zenner voltage rating ( 4.3 volt one are normally whats needed. )


the resistor devider network will pro-rata hide voltage from the gauge, and thus it will read differently.... not that the ECU use's the input for anything but fuel cut, once a certain voltage is reached.

I see your point but tbh - that gauge is less than useless as it is!
I've got an aftermarket one (although i'm not convinced that it's calibrated properly) so i don't really use the std gauge for anything now.

I just used a ball spring MBC in the turbo pressure sensor line set to 15psi. There has been mention that the ECU does not use this sensor for fuelling, just for boost cut and I can say I've not noticed any difference.

If I'm wrong though...please someone correct me!!

Surely that means you haven't got any fuel cut at all though. If your turbo fails and starts boosting to 16+psi your car won't have any safety mechanism in place to save it.

WRT to the ECU using the output for fueling etc. I believe that is for rev3+. Rev1-2 only use this output for fuel cut so it depends how old your car is. If you have a rev3+ and your using the MBC to control fuel cut then you'll be causing the ecu to fuel for 15psi even when you running 16+ psi. Hence it will be running leaner than usual. However, due to the mapping of the std ECU that MIGHT not be a bad thing as it normally over-fuels badly. I'd want to see the result on a dyno print out before running like that tho.
